'Come Dancing' Theatre Royal E15

'Come Dancing' Theatre Royal E15

There is a great new show now running over in Staratford E15 called 'Come Dancing' written by Ray Davis (The Kinks).
A brilliant evening of nostalgia set in the old dance halls of London back in the 50s. Its set in the famous Ilford Palais Dance Hall and is full of gritty, lovable characters and great music that really captures the spirit of East London just after World War II.
Last nights opening night audience lapped it up and it looks like its set for a good run. There are very few theatres in the UK that have such a unique atmosphere as the Theatre Royal and it has a strong history of transferring shows into town, 'Five Guys Named Mo' being the most notable, and if a small theatre had a few months free there's no reason why this wouldn't be huge in the West End.
It's initial run is until Oct 11th but an extension is now almost certain until Oct 24th

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

Pic- The Ilford Palais Dance Hall.
Only recently demolished after falling into dreadful disrepair. Another piece of London history gone forever.
'Come Dancing' -I'm so pleased this great show has had the reviews its had. Its a fun show that is just so infectious you cant but have a great time.
The reviews have all stated that it has a few rough edges before it could contemplate a West End season. It's this rough edge that appeals so much because the Theatre Royal has always had that daring feel around it ever since Joan Littlewood was director there back in the 50s and 60s.
I think this show will reappear next year and get seen by a lot more people.
A great night out!

GREAT NEWS!
As i mentioned on the top of this thread that the production was penciled to possibly extend by two weeks.
The new closing date is now Nov 8th.
The management are also considering putting on extra midweek matinees for the rest of the run.
If you want to see a greta new British musical your chances have just gotten better. I, for certain, will be going again!

Love Stratford. Love what it does. Five Guys Named Moe came out of this place. Monkey was great. Over the years, so many jewels.

The place is a national institution. I hope I get to this show, but the diary is pretty full already.

I kind of know what you guys on here like and dislike, this is one gem of a show that you lot will love. Try to catch it in Stratford E15 but as I've said I don't think the last performance will even be Nov 8th. This will be back next year.

I agree with Mama - there's a lot to enjoy in this show, and while I didn't *love* it I don't think there's anything wrong with it that can't be fixed in the time between this production and a return engagement or transfer.

Its funny to hear that the show was originally offered to the National Theatre but they saw it as not good enough for them to produce so it was rejected when first put forward Isn't this the very kind of product that a National Theatre should be producing?

It is, but since when has Hytner's National ever looked favourably upon musical theatre that didn't come out of BAC or the US? There have been what, two musicals on during his reign? Love or hate Trevor Nunn, his dedication to putting on lavish stagings of the classics was much appreciated and well deserved!

*Jerry Springer and Caroline or Change, am I missing something?
