I don't understand what some people are griping about. This is an honest-to-goodness song. A traditional, beautiful, heartbreaking song.
This is what musical theater is all about! Dramatic motion through song, how incredible!

I just can't help but cringe, hearing Harvey sing.
still love him as a performer though and this song is lovely!
I think a lot of people are negative, not because it's actually bad, but because it's not EDGY or RISQUE or CONTEMPORARY.
it's a solid old-fashioned musical and kids don't know how to appreciate this anymore (i.e. Curtains) ... it's because of Duncan Sheik and Idina Menzel and bla bla bla.

I don't see this as old-fashioned though. I hated curtains, not because it was old-fashioned, but because I had seen it all before, heard it all before. You can keep the old-fashioned form and still say something new, Curtains didnt do that.
This is still fairly new, the sung-through thing without the bombastic chandelier dropping awe. A quiet, tender musical. I'm all for it.
That was a wonderful song.
Not sure about Harvey singing it, though.
(a) I can't stop listening!
(b) For *whatever* reason, Harvey's low notes make me melt.
(c) John Bucchino never ceases to amaze moi.
(d) I CAN'T STOP LISTENING!

My favorite song in the score. Excellent.
On one hand, that song is excellent.
On the other, Harvey sort of makes me cringe.

"it's a solid old-fashioned musical"
I completely disagree. I don't think it's old- fashioned in any way.
For an old- fashioned treatment of this kind of material, check out "A Family Affair".
Hearing Harvey in the Hairspray demo certainly didn't scare me out of purchasing tickets, and hearing him sing/warble Coney Island sure isn't keeping me away from this show either. Looking forward to seeing it on April 12. GO HARVEY!

wow. way to jump on me.
you misunderstood my "old-fasioned musical" comment.
it's NOT Rent. it's NOT Spring Awakening. it's NOT hip or trendy. you can disagree about it being "old fashioned" but it's not contemporary or EDGY by any means...
again, I think it's sad that a lot of the younger generation love green skin belters and coke-addicted rockers and sexual teens but can't appreciate something LIKE "A Catered Affair"
now am I clear?
Where can one get a full copy of this demo? I heard it once, but alas, I have no copy. I can hardly wait to hear this score! I'm seeing it this week!
I'm looking for the full demo too, I only have "Coney Island". Otherwise, I might post more.

There's a video of Leslie singing another song from that musical but the audio quality is pretty poor. Just do a search for Autumn Leaves on that same website, beautiful song.
Wow, this is just....WOW!!!
Now I'm even more excited to see this.
Two more days!!!

I'm far from being a member of the younger generation (and not the one in FLOWER DRUM SONG either
and I think the score for A CATERED AFFAIR is extremely dull.
That's a lovely song, and Harvey sounds wonderful singing it.

I have a recording of Jessica Molaskey singing "Autumn Leaves" ... it's GORGEOUS.
I hate to comment on shows I haven't seen, however, I agree w/those posters who cringe at Harvey's voice. The music is lovely, though, and (IMHO), Harvey probably should get out of his own way these days, as a performer (singer), because a legit baritone could really make this song sound fabulous. Love Harvey the writer, humanitarian, etc., but sometimes ego can bust up a perfectly wonderful-sounding "old-fashioned" musical.
Why is everyone bad mouthing the score?
I mean, here is a great character song that gets the point across, and is somewhat catchy.
great song! not-so-great Harvey?
