Confused about a song from Tick, Tick Boom
Confused about a song from Tick, Tick Boom#0
Posted: 7/16/05 at 12:17pmA few days ago my friend sang a song from Tick, Tick, Boom. He didn't say what it was though. All I know was that he kept saying things like "Michael playing the piano" and telling different stories in the song. If anyone knows what song that is, that would be great!

Posted: 7/16/05 at 1:59pm"Why" is a great song. I love the entire score to TTB...I actually think I like it better than RENT. I recently performed "Therapy" at a benefit concert for a local theatre.

Sesame Street-ish for me. Sunday and Sugar are also a tad offputting for me, but its a great show and I'm sure its just that I haven't given those songs enough of a chance.

Was lucky to see Nikki Snelson, Christian Campbell, and Wilson Cruz on tour in Pittsburgh. My daddy took me there for Christmas.

Posted: 7/16/05 at 11:32pmi don't know if this connection has been made on the board before but i realized it a few months ago. sunday from ttb and sunday from sunday in the park with george are incredibly similar at parts - the music and the lyrics. it makes sense because i know larson was greatly influenced by sondheim. sunday is quite the tribute to him.

there was a large interview with larson's father who states (as if it weren't clear enough already) that sunday is a tribute to sondheim. it's written in inversion from the sunday score...
also, i saw nicky snelson and wilson cruz too... but they were with joey mac here in boston! and he was amazing

"Sunday" from TTB is not just "similar" to "Sunday" from SITPWG - it's a PARODY - it's virtually the identical song, with the melody and harmony "inverted" (as noted above). Near the end the melody and lyrics actually ARE identical.
If you are unfamiliar with SITPWG, you probably listen tothe song from TTB and think, "what the hell is this?" If you know SITPWG, you hear the song from TTB and think, "****ing brilliant!"
From SITWG: "Bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum bum..."
From TTB: "Buns buns buns buns buns buns buns buns buns..."

I would love to do this show. As for JL, I think that nobody is "taken" before they're time. And I think he was meant to leave behind RENT and Tick, Tick...Boom. Both are incredible pieces of theater. He wasn't around long enough to have a "flop" or a crappy score, so I think its good that he left on top.

Posted: 7/17/05 at 2:47pmI cry whenever I hear "Johnny Can't Decide" and laugh my bum off during "Therapy." JL was a genius, and thank God his legacy can live on through his works.

The thing that's creepier about Raúl's portrayal of Jonathan is that they never met.
A sign of his brilliance, I say.

out of curiosity, there was no copyright issue with the two songs? do you think the issue was ever brought up and sondheim agreed to it somehow or it didn't matter? i know you can take a certain number of bars of music legally but what about these two nearly identical songs?
