After all the crying about poor Raul being "robbed", I just wanted to say, I thought David Hyde Pierce did an wonderful job in "Curtains" and deserved his award.
My roommate and I yelled so loud I think we may have an eviction notice waiting today!

JOY!
Me too. So happy for him. He deserves it.
I thought Esparza was breathtaking, but I knew this would happen. Hyde Pierce was great though. Good for him. It was nice to see Curtains win something. Hell, after all of the prentious speeches from the self centered schmucks from Spring Awakening, I would have even liked it to win Best Musical.
To me, David Hyde Pierce means a lot more to the succcess of Curtains than Esparza does to Company simply because he's holding up a much weaker show. I cannot imagine Curtains without him. I thought his award fully deserved.
I am so thrilled for David- he's a remarkable actor and singer; finally got what he deserved after 25 years in this lifestyle. And, no, I don't think Raul should've won the Tony- judging him based on performance alone last night, I think his voice is way too operatic (ok, that's maybe not the word; perhpas "below"-y?). Nonetheless, he's a good singer and he makes a great Bobby, but I saw "Curtains", and thought DHP was marvelous.
I was shocked and literally jumped out of my seat when he won. Congrats to David!!

I was thrilled David Hyde Pierce won. I thought CURTAINS was a mixed bag but I loved his performance. His speech was the most touching of the evening and the classiest. Bravo!
hmmmm. Raul's voice too operatic? Based on last night's performance? First of all no. More musical theaterish....whaddyaknow? God forbid all of Broadway turn to pop and rock vocals. Raul perfectly represented a strong musical theater performance through his talent. He was definitely the truest and best choice for an Actor in a MUSICAL. Let me reiterate.....MUSICAL....where singing is ahh well slightly important.
DHP award was the only award that i was excited about
I was just soo soo thrilled he won. I kind of figured he would win but it was still such a surprise. I loved Raul's performance but DHP was so deserving. He's just so talented and such a great guy.
Congratulations David! I make no secret of the fact I'm disappointed for Raúl, but I also make no secret of the fact I think Pierce also turned in a Tony-deserving performance. I've never been moved to give a spontaneous standing ovation before, but when Pierce rode out on stage at the end of 'Curtains', I had no choice and was on my feet before I knew it. Keep being joyful and wonderful, and love that Tony award well. :3
When they announced "David Hyde Pierce" as the winner, I screamed "YES", which started my dog barking, which started all the other dogs in the neighborhood barking. Not really good at 10:45 pm, but I was really really happy! Way to go David! It couldn't happen to a nicer guy!
I was thinking of starting a similar thread earlier but thought it might come across as a bit insensitive given the Raul-angst I've seen expressed since the Tonys. :0
However, I can't hold back my happiness for DHP - I was really touched when I heard he'd the told the press that he'd realised how much the Tony meant to him - and I was even more moved when I read bially082's post which revealed DHP couldn't stop smiling at the after-show party.
Good for him! He's a lovely guy - hugely talented, much respected, totally gracious and COMPLETELY deserving of the recognition he gets imho! I don't think his success can be attributed solely to his 'fame' or the 'good fortune' he's had in his career (modest as he is). He's worked hard for what he's achieved and his acceptance speech reflected his humility. I'm sure he would genuinely wish Raul good luck for future award shows - and, given the fact that RE has moved so many BWW regulars, I wouldn't disagree with that sentiment (even though he's not my particular cup of tea, from what I've seen).
But it's not my intention to revive dead-in-the-water debates: genuine commiserations to Raul and his (non-histrionic) fans and HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to DHP and his (non-gloating) fans.
I was so excited he won! He was just really likable in that role and he's a great performer, I think. My friend and I both started jumping up and down and screaming when he won! :) (I'm glad my neighbors didn't call the cops...)
Besides the fact that Esparza gave a better performance, his show is in much more dire straits
Curtains is a fun show that should have a healthy run. Company is a very good revival of a classic show that it holding on by its fingertips
I was definitely rooting for Raul to win, but Pierce did turn in a thoroughly charming musical comedy performance. He seems like a genuinely nice, well-liked man, with a real devotion to the theatre.
I congratulate DHP but think Esparza gave the better performance.
You have to do it Crufts style! You can't say the poodle is better than the German Shepherd, because they're hugely different dogs! Instead, you work out how close the poodle is to the ideal poodle, and how close the Shepherd is to the ideal Shepherd, and whichever is closer can be safely judged to be the winner. Bobby and Cioffi are massively different characters, but both were played to near-perfection by their actors.
Esparza clearly gave the best performance of the year, but damn it... after the speech David Hyde gave, how can I possibly be angry at him?
Congratulations, sir. You didn't deserve it this year, but you should have gotten it at some point.

I was so depressed that Raul didn't win, but what a speech Pierce had. He was so gracious and deserving of that award. Congrats to him.
I too was rooting for Raul, but I also thought that Hyde Pierce was outstanding in "Curtains." He truly is the glue that holds the show together. He also seemed truly suprised by his win and was very gracious in his acceptance speech. Congrats to him!
