Posted: 6/11/07 at 8:31pmI clapped when he won! I was so happy. I wanted either him or Raul, but I was leaning towards David.

Thank you for this thread, and especially to those who still felt that Raul might have deserved it, but still at least admitted that David gave a great performance--it started bothering me earlier that people were so upset about Raul that I didn't think David was given enough credit for a great performance, which it was, regardless of whether or not Raul's was better.
Congratulations DHP! As the night went on, more and more, I wanted him to win, and I was very excited he did, and loved his speech!

"Let me reiterate.....MUSICAL....where singing is ahh well slightly important."
Maybe DHP didn't have the better voice, but he carried the show well on his shoulders and made Curtains an enjoyable experience for me.
When I heard DHP won, I jumped so much that my laptop almost fell off my lap and onto the floor. Can't afford to do that again!

You have an excellent point. Clearly, Rex Harrison and Richard Burton did not deserve their lead actor Tonys for My Fair Lady and Camelot because well, no one would call them excellent singers...in fact they described what they did not even as much as singing as "speaking on pitch," so what an outrage that they won! Go steal the Tonys back from them this instant!

Add my congrats, please! Like many others, I was expecting Groff or Esparza to take the win, but when they called out Pierce's name, I couldn't have been more excited. And his speech was among the best given that night, so sincere! And because this thread is dedicated to that wonderfully talented man, I have to insert the quote that made me love him even more:
"Jonathan Groff, who has so much talent at a young age that I have to go take a nap."
How could his fellow nominees not forgive him?? Much love to David Hyde Pierce!

David is a wonderful performer, as much as I love Raul, I am very happy for David! Raul's time will come, it just wasn't to be this year.
And I'd much rather watch someone who can act over someone who can sing but can't act to save themselves. It was either Raul or David for me in this category, and I'm glad David won!
#34re: Congratulations David Hyde Pierce!!!
Posted: 6/12/07 at 9:20amThere are 400 other threads debating why Raul "should have won." Did it really have to be brought into this one?

I thought Raul's performance was excellent - the only memorable thing about COMPANY - but I am delighted that David won.
And he fully deserved it.
(Plus, I hear the CURTAINS Tony party was the liveliest, jolliest one in town. Someone posted on another board "You'd think THEY won the 'Best Musical' award!")
#36re: Congratulations David Hyde Pierce!!!
Posted: 6/12/07 at 9:32amNow, he does deserve a Tony. I think Spamalot was his show, and he should have won for that. Congrats to him anyway, because he really is a great guy. One of the nicest actors that I have ever met, and while I do think it should have gone to Raul, I am very happy for David.
#37re: Congratulations David Hyde Pierce!!!
Posted: 6/12/07 at 9:32amI heard that too. The fact is, DHP is universally adored by his company. To them, his win was probably just as good as a Best Musical award.

Posted: 6/12/07 at 9:34amAnd for all the post-Tony bump that SPRING AWAKENING will get, I think CURTAINS will get a comparable ZING in its Box Office.

Absolutely Rath.
Karen Ziemba said in a recent interview that, "David was a very unique and exemplary human being." Ms. Monk said, "David was the most loveable creature on the plant." I think their reactions on Tony night when DHP's name was announced spoke volumes, as did his obvious surprise. To humble to allow himself to believe he could win and gracious enough to mention each of the other nominees in his speech.
You've heard "Nice guys finish last." Yet another myth lain to rest and I couldn't be happier.
#41re: Congratulations David Hyde Pierce!!!
Posted: 6/12/07 at 11:59amThat's just cause Monk hasn't met me yet.
#43re: Congratulations David Hyde Pierce!!!
Posted: 6/12/07 at 1:42pmI haven't seen Curtains (I'd love to, though), but I enjoyed DHP's performance on the Tonys, and his speech was one of the best of the night. He was very humble and thankful for the award. You couldn't help but love him.

She's been on Broadway for 44 years and has never won a Tony. I think she deserved to feel a little entitled.

well, wickedrent: Thank you for acknowledging my "excellent point." You may be right on your view however I do not know who rex harrison was up against for his Tony. They may have well been the best choice that year.
I was referring of course to this year's decision. Out of all the 50 plus performances I have seen on Broadway I have never had a man move me as much emotionally as Raul did in his performance. Everyone after the show that I talked to felt the same way. I have talked to many others who have gone at other times and also felt strongly about it!! I am not knocking David as an actor, I am only using him in the comparison for this award and at this time. I can't imagine anyone walking away from Curtains with a lump in their throat and goosebumps over DHP's performance...that is all!! After all, there is a reason why this was considered an upset by all.

I won't lie, I'm ridiculously upset that Raul didn't win. He should have won it. However, I like David Hyde Pierce as well, and I think he's doing a wonderful job in Curtains...so it makes me feel a little better that it at least went to someone who deserves it, because I think he does. I thought his speech was great too, I loved the "I'm sorry, but you're going to have to leave" (or whatever the exact quote was) thing haha So congrats to him. :)

Wait wait wait. What?
Rex Harrison beat opera singers Fernando Lamas (Happy Hunting)and Robert Weede (Most Happy Fella) for his legendary performance as Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady. He then went on to best Anthony Quinn, Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole and Peter Sellers for the Oscar.
Much can be debated in the world of the theatre...but I think it's pretty well accepted that Rex Harrison gave one of the greatest musical theatre performances both on Broadway and on film.
