The tour is coming through next month and it looks like a fun show. Worth $30?
it's not your typical musical as it does not actually feature anyone on stage singing, but it is a great show. I was left very touched by it... it's a very moving piece...

It's definitely worth it for $30. It's not my favorite show, but it is very interesting. I saw it with the original New York cast. It shouldn't have won the Tony for Best Musical, but what can you do?
Go see it.

Alrighty then ... thanks for the opinions! *goes to scrape up $30 through slave labor*
I LOVE this show. Whether it really is a musical or not, it hands down was the best show of that year and deserved the tony. I was very moved by it and it's still one of my favorite shows.

Can someone tell me how sexualized or sensualized the show is? And be specific please? Thanks

*bump*
each scene is about people is desperate situations trying to make "contact" with each other. the first scene "swinging" is based on a painting of a girl on a swing. while this plays out the two men are basically fighting over her and there is some rather sensual dancing and or swinging done on the swing. they are practically on top of each other for part of the time while on the swing. provided, of course, that the tour uses the same choreography of the Broadway production. that's about as raunchy as it gets.
the second scene "did you move?" takes place in an Italian restaurant and is a housewife's fantasy of a more entertaining life for herself. there is little sex, but she does kind of, I guess, "hit on" some of the waiters, but it's nothing. there are some curse words that are exchanged at the beginning of the scene if I remember correctly.
the second act and third scene is when things get really cool. "contact" is about a lowly depressed man who goes to a bar and becomes fascinated with a girl in a yellow dress. this act contains curse words and a suicide attempt, but again little if any sexual situations.
hope that helps.

When you say "there is little sex, but she does kind of ..." do you mean sexual situation?? I'm assuming there wasn't actually any *sex*.
But thanks. Don't know if it helps me much, but hopefully it will help my mom ...
the whole thing was...
"there is little sex, but she does kind of, I guess, "hit on" some of the waiters, but it's nothing."
there's no sex she just flirts with them...

There are no live sex acts going on in this show!!
It's a great show anyway.
I saw it with...I think it was Leigh Zimmerman...and it was great. Enjoyed the music, didn't miss that no on was actually singing it live, and thought the show was great.
And I paid $65.00!!
The most sexual part of the show is the two lovers on the swing in which they are fully clothed and assume a couple of sexual positions on the swing. It's nothing two awful (it was shown on PBS unedited, so it can't be THAT bad).
If you hate ballet or dance performances, then it's likely you will be bored or not like this at all. I loved it. It is NOT a musical by a long shot. There are a few spoken lines in the second and third pieces, and one characters sings a line in the third piece. Other than that, all the music is prerecorded and unoriginal (as in the case of many modern dance ballets like Blue Suede Shoes or Company B).
I took my parents to see the tour and we loved the show from beginning to end. The stories are comedic, dramatic, and at times, very poignant. While I would have classified it as technically a "play" rather than a "musical" that year at the Tonys, it certainly deserved an award, but Best Musical that year should have gone to The Wild Party or The Dead.
Actually, I feel like Contact makes ballet VERY accessible and might make people who normally wouldn't attend the ballet consider trying it. I loved the show because: a) Susan Stroman is BRILLIANT, b)it was a truly original concept for broadway that was wonderfully executed -- broadway is definitely LACKING in truly original concepts, c)I love Karen Ziemba and she was incredible in Contact.

It's so sad that the PBS broadcast was done after K.Z. left the show. Charlotte D'Amboise is a fine dancer, but a lousy actress, and completely ruined the final moment of "Did You Move?"
Remember, the piece was created specifically for KZ.
"Remember, the piece was created specifically for KZ."
In point of fact, Karen had about as much to do with the creation of the piece as Stroman. They were more partners than choreographer and dancer.
I was glad to see KZ FINALLY win a Tony. She's been brilliant in everything I've seen her in and I thought she deserved best actress for Steel Pier. Not to take anything away from Bebe for winning for Chicago, but I felt there was no comparison between what was required and provided by these 2 actresses. The journey KZ completed during Steel Pier was amazing.
Hanna, CHICAGO was a megahit while STEEL PIER was a hugely disappointing flop. Tony voters don't like flops, and you can multiply that when it comes to the major awards.
Yes -- it was quite unfortunate that KZ did such amazing work in a show that was so unsuccessful. I was just glad to see her finally get the recognition she deserves.
