It makes me cry every time and I bring everyone I can to see it, both to be totally entertained and to learn a little something about what's north of 96th street. Technically, the neighborhood of Washington Heights, where the musical takes place, is north of 155th Street.
But below that is Hamilton Heights, which I guess could be considered "the heights." That's still only above 135th, though.
Lin mentions 96th Street because A) it's an easier lyric, and B) it's the southern border of Harlem, a traditionally black and Latino neighborhood, and stereotypically the line that white people never cross. That's changed a LOT in the past decade, though.
