Country or Rural Musicals

Well, first I was thinking about musicals with a Western setting and which ones I like the most. Then I realized that some musicals aren't necessarily set in The West but they do have a rural, country-western sensibility. Carousel is set in Maine and Shenandoah in Virginia but I would include these on my list. So which ones do you like? Which ones would you add to the list?

Posted: 8/16/04 at 11:02pmIs Carousel set in Maine? I saw a wonderful performance of it just this past Friday, and I thought it was set in Salem, MA. Although, as I type this, I realize it may be set in Salem, ME. Either way, I know its Salem, as the god-like guy (I don't know if he had a name) told his assistant lady to put a star over Salem right after Billy got 'Up There'.

Robert Nassif Lindsey's "Opal" takes place in rural Oregon, I think. It's a great score.
