I saw Rent for the first time on June 20, so I have no other stage performances to compare it to, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I'm not sure which were understudies but I had Tim as Roger, Luther as Mark, Destan Owens as Collins, D'Monroe as Benny, Nicole Lewis as Joanne, Justin Johnston as Angel, Moeisha McGill as Mimi, and Ava Gaudet as Maureen.
I was most impressed by Nicole. I don't know why but she stuck out in my opinion. I really enjoyed "we're okay".
Someone said Ava looked like Idina and I agree. I was up in the mezzanine and was surprised by the resemblance. Her "Over The Moon" was quite entertaining.
I definately agree that Tim seemed very angry as Roger, almost seems like 'overacting' a bit. But I still thought it was very good. I specifically remember giggling at the way he did the part 'didn't recognize you without the handcuffs'. I stagedoored and met him. He had an ice pack on his right hand because he hit the table during the show and messed up his knuckles. He was still a trooper though, signing autographs- ice pack and all. Very nice guy. he stayed longer than the autograph seekers even.
LOVED Justin as Angel. It could have a lot to do with the fact that Angel is such a great character anyway. He really made you love and care for Angel.
anywho, that's my two cents.

It doesn't matter who the cast is. You will find some people who love it and some who don't. I've seen the show more than 75 times in the past ten years and, like anyone, have my favorites, but I've never had the show ruined by any particular actor in it.

my personal favorite is when Robin de Jesus understudied Justin Johnson for Angel.
I love the way it was portrayed, and I def. liked Robin more than Justin.
And the Matt Caplan comments, I LOVED HIM!!!!!! he was amazing.

The current cast is so/so. They are very different. I never got to write a review for the last time I saw the show, so this is a good chance to:
May 20, 2:00
Tim Howar (Roger)---He had a very rocker type voice which I loved. His acting and chemistry with Antonique was okay, pretty good. The only thing that was distracting was his angry facial expressions during What You Own. I swear the viens in his neck were about to explode all of the first two rows.
Matt Caplan (Mark)---I like him, but his bald head really makes me feel akward. Maybe it's because I am not used to a bald Mark, but Mark isn't bald. Just, no. He is a really perverted Mark. That's the best way to explain him.
Antonique Smith (Mimi)---This girl has the most powerful voice I have ever heard, but I don't think it is the right voice for Mimi. Out Tonight blew down the roof though. Her acting was pretty natural, but her dancing...eh.
Robin De Jesus (Angel u/s)---For me, the highlight of the show. The best Angel I have ever seen. I thought he looks exactly like Wilson in the Santa drag. His voice was great, his acting was over the top. The best acting I have seen in the role. His smile and charm just made you love him. The only thing that was distracting was his height. His was at least a foot shorter than Destan. The poor thing was on his tip toes in those heels all the way through We're Okay! I would love to see him full time after Justin leaves.
Destan Owens (Collins)---I don't know how to explain my feelings for Destan. I don't feel any emotion from him until I'll Cover You Reprise. He seems so bland. And I don't like how his voice is so vibretto (spelling?). But his ICY:R was extremely beautiful.
Ava Gaudet (Maureen)---Boring. Nothing new. She does look like Idina though.
Kenna Ramsey (Joanne)---Vocally the best Joanne I have seen. She hits these crazy notes in TMOLM. Her acting is great, very sincere. Too bad she left
D'Monroe (Benny)---I don;t like him very much. He always loosed his voice ro something towards the iddle of You'll See. His acting is decent though.
Crystal Monee Hall (Soloist u/s)---She was AMAZING! That's all I gotta say for Crystal.
It was a great show, lots of energy. Robin seemed excited
The audience seemed to love it. I guess the show is in okay shape, which is a good thing. And the new Joanne's name is Nicole Lewis, and I heard she sounds exactly like the OBCR. I hope she loosens up and makes the role her own. But maybe it is time to freshen things up at the Nederlander. I would love to see Warren Nolan, Tracy McDowell, and Jed Resnick from the current NET replace Destan, Ava, and Matt.

Wow. I can't believe you brought back a nearly four month old thread for that. Good for you for doing a search but . . .
Well, as long as we are bringing this back and talking about the cast . . . has their been any word on when Hanke is leaving? I told a friend that I would take her since she has only seen the movie, and I really want to see him again but don't know when we are going.
