Cut songs from POTO

I heard that in the 2004 movie, the Phantom was originally supposed to sing a new song but that song was eventually cut out from the movie (and (I think) Learn to be Lonely was put in its place)...What song was the Phantom suppose to sing?
Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky. With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high! Blood-red were the spurs i' the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat, when they shot him down on the highway, down like a dog on the highway, and he lay in his blood on the highway, with the bunch of lace at his throat... (The Highwayman. Sung by: Loreena McKennitt)

I can't remember the name of it, but I read an article that said to look for it in the "deleted scenes" on the DVD....

Also Learn to Be Lonely was supposed to be sung by the Phantom during the movie as well, in place of No One Would Listen. But it didn't really fit anywhere. And they decided to give it to Minnie Briver instead of Gerry.

The pace of the movie is still too slow. They need to cut the flashback, a verse of music of the night, the scene after where meg goes into the dressing room, and Christine working her way to the graveyard. The movie really really needs 15 minutes cut off.

re: Cut songs from POTO

I like it just the way it is. Not that it's perfect because it isn't. Especially the lines that are sung on stage that are spoken in rhyme on film, like the "Raoul it scares me. Don't make me do this." ect. first in each instance they deleted a beautiful melody and if they were just trying to add more dialogue having them speak in rhyme was not the way to go. but, obviously it wasn't going to come to us in any state of perfection. It would be nice to see the deleted song on the DVD but I really doubt they will let it out due to the fact the "Learn to Be Lonely" is the same as "No One Would Listen" just with different lyrics.

re: Cut songs from POTO

It is? I wonder if they filmed "Learn to Be Lonely"/"NO one would listen" because they blend some of it into the score. During "Masquerade" after he sings "...her teacher, her teacher" and looks at her there is about 30 seconds of 'Learn to Be Lonely" there. So I wonder if it was originally filmed and then cut later on?

I would have liked to have heard Gerard sing it.

I posted this in the Golden Globes thread but I don't know if anyone read it... They cut the title song "Phantom of the Opera"! Why did they do that??

yes, Christine, they cut two whole verses out of the show's title song. just one of many reasons i really don't care for the movie version.
