When Victoria Clark accidentally dropped her glasses into the audience shortly after the beginning of Piazza this afternoon, an audience member handed them up to her and she responded in character : "That's what I like about Florence...the people here are so friendly..."
Jackie Hoffman isn't the only one who can adlib with the audience.

That's very clever!
How I love Vickie.
Thank you, that is so funny. I wish everyone could see the smile on my face.
Ha. I love it. Saw the show last night. My second time seeing her, fourth time seeing the show. She is a goddess.
I ♥ Vicki Clark.
LOL! Something similar happened when she was in Cabaret: she dropped her cigarette on one of the front tables, and at an appropriate moment she leaned over and, in character, said "I'll take this back." The audience was in hysterics.

OMG! What an actress! I could never come up with something that well in character.
Someone's got butterfingers...
hahaha, she's so great! i really need to get over there and see that show again. i was on a "piazza" kick for like, 3 months, and i haven't been there since kelli o'hara left!
It was hard for me to go back after Kelli left, but Katie is doing a great job. It also helps that if you want to see Kelli, you can hit the Pajama Game.
IssaMe, you saw it yesterday too?!?!?!?!?!?!

Victoria Clark is such a natural, I could just hug her forever for being such a brilliant actress. Ad libs are one of the reasons some of us would never think of doing films. Much love to Clark, everyone who has hesitated to see Katie in the show should go give her a chance and make your opinion, she gives a magnificent performance.

Yes, Katie is simply amazing (not to say that Kelli O'Hara and Jennifer Hughes also weren't as well - they were...but Katie's childlike innocence and chemistry with her Fabrizios is quite special...well then, she IS a "special child", after all). And the more you see her, the more you fall in love with her. Just perfection!
And while ad libs really aren't permitted in this show, there are little character traits which can be added or hinted at under the category of "acting" and interpreting a role.
At today's Sunday matinee, Vicki did something wonderful which she usually doesn't do (or at least not quite so noticeably) --- when she "ups the ante" so to speak by saying that Clara's dowry has been increased to $15,000 - she snapped her purse shut loudly as if to say "so THERE, Signor Naccarelli!" It got a big laugh.
Gotta love her!
IssaME- did you do stage door at the saturday mat?

No, why?
Never "stage door" and rarely go backstage unless I know somebody REALLY, REALLY well and haven't seen them in a while. The last thing an actor needs is seeing someone after a show that they see all the time anyway. But that has nothing to do with "stage dooring" as we refer to it here.
I think "stage dooring" is very, very valuable and important to the actor...so, for a lift, I occasionally stand way back across the street out of the way...and watch the stage door action just to see actors receive love. It is a lovely sight that never ceases to be moving.
Here's to "stage dooring"!
A little ad-lib like that, to me, is a wonderful way to both acknowledge your flub to the audience AND keep the flow of the show. For Piazza, which has those moments of musical comedy humor, Clark's ad lib fit in just nicely and was tastefully done.
Just curious because there was like 4 people stage dooring.... Katie sat there for like 20 mintues just chatting with me... it was quite lovely
