I have a question: I think Cyndi Lauper is terrific, but is she really a "name" anymore? I am guessing that most 20-year-olds wouldn't know who she is? Do you think that's true?

I am going out to the mall to ask some 20-year-olds. I'll report back later.

20 year olds don't hang out at the mall. 14 year olds do. teenagers and 20-somethings know cyndi lauper, she is a household name.

I am guessing if this makes it to the big screen, it will likely be someone like Meryl Streep.

If I never hear Glenn Close sing again, it will be too soon.

Don't under-estimate Cyndi Lauper. There was yet another bite at the The New York Times, on 4/29, that Lauper "Knocked the Producers out" with her audition. She does have fans in their teens. The majority of them are from 20's on up. But she is still a house hold name and has a VERY Dedicated fan base that spans the entire globe. Just Check out Cyndilauper.com

i would support cyndi for the movie. i really wish she would have been given the revival.

joker, I'm not knocking her. I would have loved to have seen her do it onstage, and am actually disappointed with the casting of Lupone after the tease of Lauper. I'm just thinking like a movie producer.

Glenn Close but no cigar. I cannot stand her "singing".

i agree rath... publicity wise it would have been wiser to put lauper in the revival rather than the movie. but we'll see i guess. i'll feel bad for her if she actually does neither because i want it for her, and apparently she does too!

I know that...I understand what you mean...Meryl Streep would be amazing...but never say never.

Glenn Close singing the (ostensibly) melodic score of Sunset Boulevard and Glenn Close singing the severe character songs of Lovett in Sweeney Todd are two very different things.

glenn probably can't do it anyway because she's attached to a 2006 night music revival.

Glenn Close has been attached to this revival for about 8 years now...who knows if it will ever get off the ground.
That said, I'd love to see Russel Crowe take a shot at Sweeney himself, with Lauper by his side. That would be unlike anything we've seen or heard thus far.

can Crowe sing? Do you think theyll make a new recording of the Sweeney revival cast? Just wondering, I'm not really a sondheim fan, but this show intrigues me because it is slight darker.
Oh, and I'm 19 and now who lauper is.

Crowe front fronted a rock band called 30 Odd Foot of Grunt, and he has a solo album too. I haven't heard either personally, but I think he's a great actor who can do a lot with a dark role, so I'd at least consider him a cool possibility.

If I were a normal/typical movie-goer (which I'm not) I would consider Cyndi Lauper as total and complete stunt-casting in that movie. Russell Crowe makes sense, as he's a big-name movie star, but to put Cyndi Lauper beside him would sound ludicrous.
I want Meryl Streep or Glenn Close.

In your dreams there will be a movie of Sweeney Todd. Zadan and Meron developed it in the early 90s and actually had a reading of the script with Meryl Streep and a few other luminaries, but no one wanted to put up the money to make a movie of it. If Russell Crowe does get one going, it will probably be an all-Australian vanity production -- he'll try and talk Kidman into doing it with him and some of those florid faces from Moulin Rouge. Do you REALLY see him playing opposite Cyndi Lauper??? If he's serious, i doubt Lauper is very high on his list. He'll want to do it with someone at his current level of stardom.

The last "official" updated status on this Movie was February 15, 2005 and at that time, the screenplay was to written by John Logan and the movie was to be directed by Sam Mendes, with a release scheduled for sometime in 2006. Everything else, up to that point, would have been rumor and speculation.
There was then the Playbill article of March 31, 2005 which quoted the Daily Mail newspaper saying:
"Crowe is “mulling over” whether or not to accept the role. The movie is being made by Sam Mendes’ Scamp Films, although Mendes has not confirmed that he will direct it. As for the other main casting, there are reportedly several names in consideration for the role of Mrs. Lovett. Emma Thompson, Imelda Staunton and Toni Collette are all cited by the Mail as being “in the mix”."
Then there is this from a blog I read:
"........... I just wanted to note that during the interview with Sondheim he did talk about the upcoming Sam Mendes directed Sweeney Todd movie. Sondheim complemented the script (by Jon Logan of The Aviator fame) and Sam Mendes. He went on to say that they (Logan and Mendes) had a very specific idea about Sweeney Todd 'not just structural' --Sondheim obviously knew way more than he was telling---and then he said that the film was now in the hands of an actor that they all hope will do it."
