coming to town in a few weeks...
I have always used Playbill.com. Are there better ways to get discount tickets online?

Posted: 4/3/11 at 1:32amA membership in TDF will propbably be worthwhile if you plan to be in NYC often this year. Out-of-Town memberships are very cheap!
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

TDF stands for Theatre Development Fund - www.tdf.org
"Who qualifies for TDF NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP?
To qualify for TDF NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP, you must live 100 miles or more outside of New York City and belong to one of the following groups: full-time students, full-time teachers, union members, retirees, civil service employees, staff members of not-for-profit organizations, performing arts professionals, members of the armed forces or clergy.
Visitors who live over 100 miles from New York City now have access to the same extraordinary selection of New York City theatre, dance and music performances at discount prices ($20 to $36 a ticket) that over 80,000 New Yorkers enjoy—but at a special reduced membership of only $12 a year (regular membership for New Yorkers is $30.00 per year), only a dollar a month!"
I'm a local member of TDF, and have been very pleased with it. But there are some big caveats. First of all, it does NOT sell tickets to all the shows! You won't get the biggest hits, or even Addams Family. (TDF is run by the same people who do the TKTS booth in Times Square, but the offerings aren't the same.)
Musicals are less common on TDF - your best chance of catching a musical is if it's still in previews. For instance, I saw Wonderland and Catch Me If You Can through TDF.
I've seen some great plays in previews through TDF, but once they opened to great reviews, disappeared off TDF, never to be seen again!
A real kicker with TDF is, you don't know where your seat will be until you pick up your ticket(s). I've had center orchestra seats, I've had nosebleed seats. It's a crapshoot, with better chance of getting good seats Mon-Thurs.
Recently, I've seen the following shows through TDF (all for $35-$43 each, fees included): Catch Me If You Can (nosebleed but still a great view); Wonderland (back orchestra); Bengal Tiger (center orchestra, awesome seat!); Driving Miss Daisy (back orchestra); Mother****er With The Hat (2nd row mezzanine); La Cage Aux Folles (mezzanine); Phantom (back orchestra)...
Tomorrow I'm going to see Jerusalem, Monday I'm seeing House of Blue Leaves, and Thursday I'm seeing Born Yesterday - all courtesy of TDF!
It all depends on what you want to see and how flexible you are. The offerings on TDF change several times a day.
Broadwaybox.com has the best discount codes - better than Playbill, in my experience.
And http://nytix.com/ has info on the rush policies for all the shows (also discount codes).
