Turner is NOT doing Turner, boy. Have you even seen her performance? I also went to see the show again the other night and Kathleen's performance was shattering. I was in the front row this time and had the privilage of seeing every facial expression, every body movement, every wince. Cherry Jones may not wear any makeup in Doubt but Kathleen, with makeup has never been more raw, more open, or more emotionally ugly as she is in this play. By the third act, the monumental sense of loss shown in her eyes was absolutely enough to make you fall apart. She pulls out all of the stops in this role and she deserves to win that Tony. No disrespect to Ms. Jones, but I think Kathleen will be up on that stage come June.
As for you, Rath--just keep the faith the way you did before Kathleen came to Broadway :)

Posted: 4/1/05 at 3:07pmI would give Turner the Tony on the strength of her third act opening soliloquoy alone.

Posted: 4/1/05 at 3:15pmAnd no disrespect to Ms. Turner, I wouldn't necessarily dismiss what Cherry is doing in Doubt, either (not to mention creating a character in a new play from scratch). As Rath initially posted, it's indeed a horse race.

Posted: 4/1/05 at 3:18pmCherry is brilliant in DOUBT. She is giving a layered, textured performance performance, as is Kathleen. I'm seeing STREETCAR tonight, so I'll be able to form my opinion of Natasha. I think that the other two spots will go to Jessica Lange and Phylicia Rashad, who were both very good.

Posted: 4/1/05 at 3:25pmI'm not so sure that they're going to give Lange a nod.

Posted: 4/1/05 at 3:31pmShe got mixed reviews, but I figured she would get a nod on name value. I actually liked her performance very much.

Posted: 4/1/05 at 4:51pmAfter seeing ON GOLDEN POND yeseterday evening (the review will be up this weekend) - I believe Leslie Uggams deserves the nomination before Lange.

Posted: 4/1/05 at 4:55pmI believe that they will consider Uggams a Featured Actress. I saw the show in DC and she didn't do anything for me.

Turner is great. Jones is extraordinary.
Jones is in a whole different league than Turner.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

I agree, Priest. I loved Turner but I was SMASHED by Jones.

"Turners doing Turner, Cherry is a masterpiece."
I cannot disagree more with that.

Time Out New York takes a second look at Doubt in the current issue. They don't have reviews on their website, but here are some highlights from critic Adam Feldman's review:
"These days, it is rare for a Broadway play to make you think even once; to make you think twice is an accomplishment of substance. Many plays burn brightly onstage and extinguish themselves in the process, but the shadow of Doubt follows you home from the theatre."
...
"After my first encounter with Doubt, I came to a firm conclusion about Father Flynn’s guilt; at the Walter Kerr, my opinion was almost reversed. Yet this apparently central question is of secondary importance. Shanley is less concerned with factual certainty than with moral certitude; his eloquent writing weaves the play’s complex considerations - faith and modernity, truth and consequences - into a terribly fine and human brocade. If you haven’t seen Doubt yet, see it. And if you have, see it again."
