Hahaha...who says Jbara as Donkey wouldn't work?
He could totally pull of breaking into "you gotta show some tenderness"...
He'd be such a cute couple w/ a dragon...
and the part where donkey thinks he's dying and finally asks for a hug, such an aww moment like Andre's mention of the neck pillow to Muriel.
Darcy, now I'm gonna be upset when Shrek is not all DRS.

ah, so right you are. i mean, clearly adults would love shrek done by him, but you're right about kids...
what are some adult comedy movies that could be transferred?

He's something, ap:
Chris C. directed Mrs. Doubtfire. Imagine him directing the movie musical? Would he pull a reverse Stroman and direct it the same way as the original movie? When the template's good, why destroy it?

ha, funny.
wait, wrq.. i really want that to happen. imagine, not publicized to kids, shrek written by yazbeck.. with all the drs people reprising. and actually, now that i think about it:
jbara - shrek
lithgow - farquad
norbert - donkey
scott - fiona
gleason - THE DRAGON!
joanna comes sweeping in. how hilarious would that be.
Darcy--I actually was thinking that Norbert and Greg should switch, but I did think Donkey Jbara would be amusing. But Greg is a master of voices, he could def do Shrek. And Norbert would be a hilarious Donkey.
But Joanna and Norbert and Greg and Sherie...actually as I was thinking of Donkey Jbara I realized he would get w/ Dragon Gleason. Eh, oh well.
Wait Sara has to have a cameo...hmm

I think Shrek - the original movie - is fairly adult and witty in its own right. Its kind of like Sponge-Bob where it can still be funny to adults. I think that will help Yazbek a lot.
As for the scores, I stand by the fact that TFM is so good. I just can't really get into DRS as much. I think there are songs here and there that are really good (Here I am, Dirty Rotten Number)But I didn't find Great Big Stuff that laugh out loud funny at all, even on the Tonys. and don't get me wrong, i have a great sense of humor. I dunno, just thought it coulda been funnier.
I can't really have an opinion because I never got into Full Monty, but I recommend the DRS score...

wrq/then: sara could play the mirror, no? are there any other little featured roles?
you don't understand how sad i will be when this never happens. yazbeck won't write the score and i doubt not a single person from drs will be cast.
also, as great as jbara/gleason would be again... think about gleason as a dragon flying around ending up with norbert! now that would be hilarious.
and wait, now that i'm thinking about it, make the mirror a little more feature, like always with farquad, everywhere, and give that to gleason, and make sara the dragon.. she could get in a harness, fly around, and sing a ridiculous love song with donkey!
Noo I saw Gleason as the dragon, just something about...I dunno, she has to be the dragon.
The mirror's a male part and I mean not as funny as showy as Sara's role should be...b/c I was thinking male and never saw the mirror as a young man, since he converses w/ Farquad and a semi-equal level, I could see Tom Galanch as mirror.
Think Joe Cassidy should be the ginger bread man...if he can get the high squeaky voice, he'd be hysterical!
I really couldn't think of any decent Sara cameo role, maybe we need to create or greatly expand a role for her, and also need to do something for Laura.
Now also remember Robin Hood and his merry men? That could import a lot of the ensemble. I want to give Robin Hood to Dennis Stowe, he's a fantastic dancer and...I can pick who I want for this lol. Then his merry men ensemble could be...Stephen Campanella, Andrew Asnes, Tim Alex, Matt Wall..umm is that all the ensemble men? I should know this...
So men are taken care of I think...we need to find/create cameo funny role for Sara, important part for Laura and female ensemble parts.
Oh, and we were right, Greg agrees he'd be better for Shrek than Donkey
Man, imagining Norbert as Donkey is too funny...
Maybe Laura could be the dueting, exploding bird.
I forgot Pinocchio's cameo...maybe Jason Gillman could do that, gives all the Freddy understudies slightly amusing parts.

oh come on... imagine the mirror being a woman standing up to lithgow. she could even do hilarious interpretations of the "three princesses behind the three doors" instead of actually having them played by other people. she could do all three.. or just two, and then sherie's entrance... that would be a great song: "the schizophrenic mirror"
come on! imagine it!
and did you talk to greg about it or what was that?!
also, the women can just fill in as other magical creatures in the forest, you know?
Yeah, I just asked him which out of Shrek or Donkey he'd prefer or be more suited for. Gave me a very detailed answer: "Shrek."
Actually, I see your point, but i started thinking of a role we could add for Sara. She could be another "princess" in the castle. Like Shrek could find her and from either the back or side she could look exactly like Fiona but then turn out to be this crazypsycho princess or something and Shrek has to somehow get rid of her, and of course Donkey plays a big part. Or, am I making it too DRSy now?

haha, i think maybe... let's at least stay with the original plot!
Oh okay, Sara could be the schizophrenic mirror.
I'm joining the conversation about 16 posts too late. My vote on the topic we started with is TFM, as I consider the scores roughly equal except that Breeze Off the River eclipses Love Sneaks In. The songs appear at roughly the same point in each show and both serve to bring a little humanity and heart to these coarse characters. But no contest, Breeze is a better song, and thus TFM gets my vote.
And I might be crazy, but I could swear that Yazbek was originally announced as the composer of Shrek, and that Tesori was announced later. Anyone with me on this?
Broadway Legend Joined: 6/10/04
i don't ever remember that. i would much more prefer yazbeck than tesori.. i thought shaiman/whitman were announced first but then went with catch me instead.
which actually, that could be a drs reunion too!
norbert as frank jr.
john as hanratty
greg as frank sr.
joanna as paula
sherie as brenda
sara as cheryl ann (the jennifer garner hooker role: one scene, one song)
Alright, I googled "Yazbek Shrek" and found a number of links mentioning that Yazbek was in talks to do it. Unfortunately it's old news so none of the links seem to work anymore. I do recall seeing it on a more reputable site at the time, but this at least shows that I'm not crazy.

If you search the same terms here on BWW you get a link to Broadway.com halfway down the page that looks like so:
# Scoundrels Composer/Lyricist David Yazbek Eyes Stage Version of Shrek (read) (discuss)

Unfortunately, that doesn't change the fact that Tesori is behind it now, not Yazbek. Which is not say that I don't really like Tesori's work -- I just think Yazbek would have been a better fit, particularly given his penchant for writing witty lyrics for coarse, crude characters. Tesori, of course, doesn't generally write her own lyrics, so the quality of this score will depend largely on her collaborator.

i'm sure she was also picked because of her ability to write a more family-friendly score (tmm), whereas yazbeck probably wouldn't... what a shame.
Yeah that's what I was gonna say. Even though Shrek certainly has a number of adult references and could be called a movie for adults as much as children, there'd be no way to get around promoting it as a musical for children, and even if Yazbek were to try that, it would not be the best he could do to try to tone it down for children. Oh well.
