"Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress Tyne Daly will portray Maria Callas in Terrence McNally's Tony-winning play Master Class at the Kennedy Center in 2010.
Stephen Wadsworth, who staged the world premiere of Anna Deavere Smith's Let Me Down Easy at Long Wharf, replaces the previously announced Walter Bobbie as the director of McNally's 1995 play. Master Class will run March 25-April 18, 2010 in the Kennedy Center Eisenhower Theater.
Daly will conjure the late opera diva, who gained notoriety not only for her virtuoso performances but for her flamboyant personal life. The play is inspired by Callas' Juilliard master classes, which were preserved on tape. For the stage production, McNally imagines the Greek soprano reliving her stage triumphs and personal tragedies as she interacts with young, hopeful performers..."

This is a joke right? Daly is a good actress, but in no way does she remind anyone of Callas.
goodone, in that picture Callas looks like Donna Murphy.

Posted: 10/22/09 at 3:54pmThat is certainly unexpected casting, but I have to admit, I'd run to see it if I could. If anything, just to wash away the dirty stains of Dunaway's Callas from my memory. I barely made it to intermission.

Callas's weight loss is an enormous part of her character's vanity and egomaniacal agenda. Tyne Daly is brilliant but outside of a reading, I can't imagine her in this...

Posted: 10/22/09 at 4:48pmThank you for that photo, BrodyFosse! I saw Patti in Master Class twice on Broadway. She was riveting from the moment she set foot on stage. I was studying with one of her teachers at the time and shamelessly dropped his name in order to chat with her after the show.
