On Playbill .com is the story that the team that did "Chicago" are set to tackle "Damn Yankees" They could very easily update it & make the NY Mets the team instead of the Washington Senators. The problem is the Mets are so bad Joe Hardy could not help & the devil would have nothing to do with them
I don't follow basketball so, I don't know anything about the refrences in your post to these Mets. I do know that Damn Yankees is a great show and I hope that if it is revived, it will be better tahn it's last Broadway incarnation.
I think Bebe Newirth would be great as Lola. She is probably one of the only people who could play taht role as well as Gwen Verdon did.
I agree with everything said. I would love for this show to be revived, especially since it's so easy to update. I also second the Bebe Neuwirth idea. I think it would be great, and it would be nice to have her back on Broadway again.
Why not just film the movie and have Bebe preserve the role of Lola on film.

The just had a revival barely ten years ago -- with Jarrod Emick.
The only way to insure, for the most part, that Hollywood does not screw up a stage play is to film the actual show. There are, however, some shows that made the transfer in very good shape. They are, in my humble opinion , as follows:
1. The Pajama Game
2. Damn Yankees
3. Evita
4. Lil Abner
5. The Music Man
Some of the worst, mainly because they gutted or changed the score dramatically, are as follows:
1. Funny Girl - Lost about 1/2 the Broadway score
2. How To Succeed - Lost about 5 songs
3. A Funny Thing - Lost 1/2 the score
4. A Chorus Line - One of the worst
5. Unsinkable Molly Brown - About 2/3 of the score was lost
6. On A Clear Day - Lost 1/2 of the score

Okay, Mr. Roxy. I want you to know that I took great umbrage to your remark about my Mets!!! Can you name another team that has Mike Piazza on it?? Yes, they're the underdogs, but they are MY team and I love 'em!!!!!!!!! (Hmmm Mike Piazza as Joe Hardy???? It'll work!)
Hmm...Jane Krakowski as Lola sounds interesting. I actually think she could be great. Same goes for Chris Seiber as Joe Hardy. I actually like your WHOLE dream cast-lol.

I am sorry . The Mets are my team but be honest they stink. What a bunch of underachievers. Art Howe looks & sounds like he had a lobotomy . Hopefully Duquette will undo the damage done by Phillips. If they were honest & said they were rebuilding I would accept that. They seriously think they can win it this year. In your dreams. I am sorry but I call them as I see them. Wait until next year (Maybe)

Sounds great! But with a major rewrite we may have something here. I would love to see the Red Sox taking the place of the Senators. There's a lot of material they can use, 1918, The Babe, the curse of the Bambino, No No Nannette, think of the posibilities!

I can see them going all out with "Who's got the Pain" to be an extravagant Fossie nightclub number. I defintley want to see how they handle "Near To You" film wise. I can see a split screen shot with old Meg and young Joe. I hope they use the score made for the revival. It's much more lively and breath taking. I felt that "Near To You" was much more haunting made into a trio.
P.S. - Did I mention "Near To You" is my favorite song in the show? hehehe

I wonder why they are delaying Guys and Dolls?

I loved the movie. Does anyone know of intent to release this on DVD? And how about Rachelle Rak as Lola? Maybe this could be HER big break.
Damn Yankees was a great show the music is truly catchy
You got to have heart....... anyway I saw the show when Jerry Lewis was in it. Jerry was pretty good in it he gave it a different feel than Victor Garber. I would love to find the soundtrack with Jerry Lewis but I don't think they made one.
If they made another revival how about Rachel York as Lola or Amy Spanger?
"Miles and Miles and Miles of Heart"
Ok...Now we all know what I am about to say...but in case some of you don't....a certain Mr. Emick is perfect for young Joe. I love Chris Sieber to death...but Jarrod won the Tony for the show and also performed it recently in Houston with Tony Randall. So I guess my dream cast is Jarrod as Joe...Bebe or Jane Krakowski as Lola (great idea btw!) and Victor Garber as the Devil.

We can't we just have Jarrod and Chris team up with Joe Machota for a screen version of Take Me Out???

There is now and forever, only ONE Joe Hardy in my eyes.....JARROD!!!
I could see Jane Krakowski or Rachel York as Lola. That's my two cents for now.

O MI GOD:
Harvey Weinstein is not gonna cast any of the people mentioned above in this film.
Whose gonna put $50 million into a film starring Rachel York or Brent Barrett:
Try, no one.
Sure Bebe's great!
But not on a 50 foot screen!..and not in a closeup:
Here is the Damn Yankees Dream cast:
Lola: Catherine Zeta-Jones
Joe Hardy: Taye Diggs
Mr.Applegate: Jim Carrey

didn't Neuwirth do Lola in the La Jolla/NYC/Emmick/Garber production already? But I do love that show. Too bad that team didn't write any more (to my knowledge) besides PAJAMA GAME and YANKEES. It's like, "where's the other shows from the LIL ABNER team"? what happened to all those flashes-in-the-pan? love that ABNER score, the characters have just passed out of popular knowledge, dammit.
I would agree with that list of "best to screen" musicals, but I think EVITA needed a new orchestration for the film. It's beautiful visually, and the cast is okay, but those 70's music arrangements with those 30's/40's costumes and those 90's music video edits were giving me a time-period multiple personality complex! I also think OKLAHOMA and CAROUSEL made pretty good transfers, but I'm a big Shirley Jones/Gordon MacRae fan. And those Aggie deMille ballets transferred to the soundstages really really really well.
I really like VOICEANTH's casting for the picture. But then again, I really like VOICEANTH's picture period. I also think Wayne Brady would make a great young Joe Hardy with Eddie Murphy the old(er) Joe and Audra McDonald playing the wife in age makeup and as herself in flashbacks. Her singing that ballad would bring up the big goosebumps. And the perfect "Sister" (pun intended) casting to sing "Gotta Have Heart" as the team's biggest fan is Her Highness Latifah.
The other good Lola new movie possibility is La Kidman.
Now, I don't want anyone to bite my head off for this, but I can't see Jim Carrey as Mr. Applegate. He just doesn't seem right for the part.
