When I suggested Bebe as Lola, it was based on my error that we were talking about a revival of the stage show on Broadway. On the stage, I don't think there are many who could act and dance the part of Lola as well as Bebe could.
Now I'm disappointed to realize that it is a movie version and not a a stage revival.

Thanks Txstwostep for the compliment!...
I should change my pic soon....
and your casting is good but remember MIRAMAX..and remember their bottom line:
DOLLARS!!!
Yes, they want "art" too...but they want both!
I can just hear Harvey going: "Audra Who?"
They need a VERY strong Lola...and a very strong Applegate ...Hardy they could cast Josh Hartnett if they wanted....
...but they better have two B.O stars who are in their prime....
What about Rose McGowan as Lola? I don't know if she can sing or dance, but what a looker!
VOICEANTH that new pic is just as fine. Do you take bad ones ever? ladies and gentleman, now THAT is a star!
I only meant Audra in support, as Joe's wife (and I'd rather hear her sing Old Joe's ballad than my suggested Eddie Murphy). I agree about the leads having to be "names" but I also think Wayne's name from TV is as big as Taye's from his small-ish movies. AND Audra has Tony's, some exposure through Rosie's old talk show, and a couple of TV series (not hits) to her name. Plus the TV movie hit ANNIE. I'd like to see Audra become a national name as a musical star, and a featured role in the next big hit musical movie couldn't hurt.
Plus some see Joe Hardy as support anyway, with Applegate and Lola as leads. I do think Queen of Most Media Latifah is a good way to go for the Jean Stapleton movie role (sorry can't remember the sister fan's character names). And I agree that either Jim Carrey or Mike Meyers is a natural for Applegate.
However, VOICEANTH, if you'd like to settle our slight differences in point of view with a wrestling match, just PM me. (That last part was particularly for my beloved JRBSTB).

But its so grainy..I even changed it to black and white...what the hell!
the compression on that thing is awful!

not as brilliant as that pic of you. Grainy or not.

Rose McGowan can sing. She has a very seductive voice. She can learn to dance if she doesn't know how to already.
Fine, here's my dream "screen" cast:
Lola - Jane Krakowski or Nicole Kidman
Old Joe - Brian Dennehey
Young Joe - Ewan McGregor
Meg - Maggie Smith or Ellen Burstyn
Applegate - Ellen Degeneras (Wouldnt that be a kick?)
Sister - Rosie O'Donnell
Mr. Van Buren - Ed Asner
In our production, we had Sister and her sidekick (I forgot her character) steal the show when they went into the nightclub scene and almost get trampled by 6 dancers so they exited.
I didn't see the revival. How was the stage movement for "Near To You" since they made it into a trio?

and who should sing "Two Lost Souls"...Joe/Lola or Applegate/Lola?!?!

In the original, Joe and Lola sang it. I like that better than Applegate/Lola anyway.
Im suprised no one agreed with Catherine Zeta Jones! I think she would be great for the role. If not her, than DEFINATELY Jane Krakowski. She's actually my first choice. As for Joe Hardy...hmmm... If it was a Broadway revival, I would still go with Krakowski as Lola, and Matthew Morrison as Joe Hardy.

I would guess that Harvey Weinstein will want to reunite as much of his CHICAGO dream team as possible. Could this be why they went with DY instead of GUYS & DOLLS so that they could interest Rob Marshall, who was involved with the revival, in directing it? (If so, I hope SHE LOVES ME is next.) If Marshall directs, I would think he would prefer to go with something based on the revival. I agree that they will go with big names. Marshall, Zadan and Meron seem to have "regular players." So I would expect Catherine Zeta-Jones, Christine Baranski, and Victor Garber to show up in the cast. How about Catherine as Lola, Garber as the coach and Baranski as Sister? Since Jack Nicholson seems to be taking in all the recent Broadway revivals, maybe he'd want to play Mr. Applegate. But Carrey and Murphy are decent choices. Other regular players Whoopi Goldberg, Kristin Chenoweth and Taye Diggs could be Meg, Gloria and Young Joe.
I think that JAck Nicholson would make an awesome Mr. Applegate, actually. That seriously could really work.

Whoppi Goldberg as Meg? Her voice is ok, but I wouldn't exactly cast her in a role when A LOT of singing occurs. Taye Diggs would make a good ball player or even Applegate himself. Kristin Chenoweth and Christine Baranski I can see either as Meg. But I think Christine would be more suited to Gloria b/c of Shoeless Joe. Christine being raised in the air by a team full of men. Hmmmmm hehehe.
I STILL WANT SHERIE RENE SCOTT AS MEG DAMMIT!

Doesn't Meg have just two songs? Didn't they cut one from the first film? I would be surprised if they left all of Meg's singing material in the film, which is one reason I thought they might think of Whoopi. Why do you want to see Sherie as Meg? I am a big Sherie fan and would love to see her in the film. I doubt they would cast her as Lola. She'd be a great Gloria too.

Alright,
Meg has more than 2 songs my dear.

Sherie Rene Scott can belt the hell out of a cow. When I saw Lauren Kennedy as Kathy, I liked her acting. Her singing sucked. I'm sorry fans, but her voice was not born for the role. Her acting was, but not her singing. Then I saw Sherie Rene as Cathy. Her acting was ok. Her singing was great though. She belted tunes Lauren's frail voice couldn't handle and this is when I saw Cathy reborn into a belter.
I know Sherie can belt Meg's songs with her amazing voice. Her acting's ok. She plays all her characters the same but who can blame her! Look at her resume! She's type casted all the time.
I didn't think of Sherie as Gloria. I guess she'd be good for the role, but I think she'd do better as Meg. Meg or Lola for Sherie. What straight man DOESNT want to see Sherie as Lola though! hehe. I can't see people sympathsize and buy into "poor humble Whoopi" routine she'd have to play. People think Whoppi as fun and independent. Could she play humble and meek?
Updated On: 6/25/03 at 04:37 PM
Whoopi did so at the beginning of COLOR PURPLE (humble and meek). I still think if Joe is black (or even if not) a great Meg would be Audra (appropriately aged). I just think in a movie moment, it would be great for us to see Joe's wife as he sees her...young and innocent and so in love with him. But in the article about a possible movie, they did mention some updating. Not sure if the show would work as a modern adaptation. The period setting fits those songs.

I like Sherie as an actress and singer. I've seen her in OVER & OVER, AIDA and LAST 5 YEARS. I thought she was wonderful in all three shows, but it was her singing and acting in LAST 5 YEARS that I was most impressed with. Cathy could be played as a victim or a bitch. Sherie made her funny, lovable, sexy and yet didn't hold back from showing Cathy's weaknesses and bad points. I would imagine Norbert blew Lauren Kennedy off the stage. While Kennedy is not untalented, I find her singing and acting on the bland side. When LAST 5 YEARS was over, I turned to my partner and said "I'm SO glad we saw Sherie instead of Lauren Kennedy in this." The couple sitting behind us with daughter then jumped into the conversation and heartily agreed. They had traveled from DC as well just to see Sherie. Then we got into a long discussion of OVER & OVER, THE RHYTHM CLUB, Singature, Lauren Kennedy and Sherie.

How was she in Over & Over?
Sherie's vocals in The Last 5 Years blew me away. Especially, Goodbye Until Tomorrow. I get a musical orgasm everytime I hear her sing "and Opennnnnnnnn MY WINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGS". Norbert defintley blew Lauren away in the last song. Lauren wasn't powerful enough to keep up the long notes. She disrespects the song on her solo album as well. She doesnt hold her notes and that just annoys me for a role as Cathy's. But as I've said, Lauren's acting made up for her frail voice. She didn't play a bitchy Kathy, she played a humble love sick puppy. I went back and edited what I said about Sherie's acting. I thought about it, and Sherie did have her high points of the show, but I still think Lauren did a better job acting wise. Sherie's "See Im Smiling, Goodbye Until Tomorrow, and A Summer in Ohio" were her strongest points. Especially See Im Smiling, jeez, she belted AND sobbed. Kudos. The rest of the songs she held the same expressions though. Smiling mostly.
A Modern Adaption would ruin some of the show's concepts. Men these days don't sit their asses on the couch and watch baseball. They go out to pubs, bars, friend's houses, hold parties, and what not. But also, (from my point of view, I don't watch sports) Isn't Baseball the least popular sport these days? Maybe changing the sport to Football would benefit the movie's ticket sales.
For example, The Tampa Bay Bucs winning the Super Bowl. Who here agrees a certain Mr. Applegate made that happen??? lol
yeah, but let's not forget that changing the sport would change the show's title!!!!!!

Just because Chicago was a box-office hit, what does Damn Yankees have that will make it the same? Chicago had two out of the three movie ingredients for stardom. 1) Sex 2) Violence. It also had some great stars. Damn Yankees has sexual appeal and sports. But will that help it's popularity? Updated On: 6/25/03 at 08:55 PM
No matter who they get, the role will always belong to Ray Walston as will Gwen Verdons Lola . I also hope they restore the songs they cut & jettison the weaker ones that replaced them in the original movie.

Sherie was wonderful in OVER & OVER. It was a mess of a show that I loved and would gladly see it again over any number of "well made shows." Linda Emond was just stunning. Jim Newman was great and sexy. David Garrison was charming. And Mario Cantone and the great Dorothy Loudon were so funny I could barely catch my breath, especially when they were on togther. Some of the people I saw the show with still crack up when we run through a few of Loudon's jokes from this. Sherie centered the piece nicely. She was funny--her monologue about how they don't write songs like Tomorrow anymore was hysterical--and she really put over the lovely sweet ballad about going to the movies at the end of the show.

I wish Sherie would do a show or record another CD. I heard her health isn't so great in L.A. I hope she's not having problems getting pregnant. Sh-K-Boom isn't doing so good either.

Horse****!
Without trying to start a fight, it's this kind of thinking that could sound a death knell to Broadway, never mind Film musicals.
I love Opera.
I am a huge Fan of Maria Callas.
I think her Norma and Violetta are definitive.
However,
Miss. Callas died in 1977.
I was 9 years old.
Even as a child, I knew, that if I ever wanted to see these great operas done live or done on film, I will have to see other women occupy these roles...
Some may be good and some may be fantastic and someday, someone, will probably be as great as Callas was.
..and..
..there have been countless nights where I left in a huff and many nights where I shouted "Brava" till I was hoarse!
It's thinking like this that keeps opera alive and kicking.
Growth.........
..and the appreciation of the past while enjoying the present.
So, I disagree. Verdon and Walston were sublime.
But I HAVE to BELIEVE that someone..somewhere.... will equal them someday....
