I thought this was going to be another one of those which-should-I-see threads ...

Joshua Logan, director of such legendary shows as South Pacific, did this is every one of his shows. And yes, he was widely mocked for doing so, with many people even at the time realizing he was a raging closet case...
...but this isn't a new thing. If Logan's show could survive a little gratuitous beefcake, so can this. Okay, most of Logan's shows were flops, and granted, given the circumstances of the production, odds are this revival will suck, but you get my point.

"I don't see why they have to do this to such a great show. If you want to put on a smut musical, write your own; don't ruin a classic."
Anything's fair game nowadays.
In the current charmless revival of On the Town, all three sailors appear in various states of undress.

If women are scantily clad in a musical is it straight porn?
Those London fringe theatres know the value of the pink pound.
Which Broadway musical is this a scene from?

After Eight did you call On the Town "charmless"? Excuse me but are you high? The show has charm up the wazoo!
After Eight THINKS he doesn't like the On the Town Revival because he THINKS it's been sexualized.
But he hasn't seen it, so how would he know?

Me too. I'm not completely disappointed by this thread though.
SEX SELLS!
You can't tell me that when you see a shirtless hot guy in a play/musical you get more into it... haha or atleast wakes you up.
You have to giggle at the pursing of lips over staging of numbers like "Whatever Lola Wants Lola Gets" (she's not talking about the bottomless pasta bowl at Olive Garden) or "A Little Brains A Little Talent" (she's not talking about her terpsichore, though her terpsichore shines, too.) But the use of the word "porn" to suggest the evils of pulchritude on display sort of goes along with the outrage voiced over the shirtless Christian Pat Boone singing "Willing and Eager" to Ann Margaret in STATE FAIR. Women were told to stay home, it would drive them mad. As Addison de Witt might say, I leave the measure of madness to others.

Have you ever seen that photo of Pat Boone that apparently inspired the SNL song "D--k in a Box"? Just go ahead and google it. People act like sexual arousal isn't a good thing or a worthy goal for artistic creation to aspire to. You kind of want to break it to AfterEight that inveterate fist bottom Jerry Herman is just not ever going to get around to creating a Smurfs musical so he can be happy once again.

"After Eight did you call On the Town "charmless"?"
Yes, I did. Isn't that what I said in my post? I could also have added crass and vulgar as well. I didn't, so I'll add it now.
"Excuse me but are you high?"
Anything but. And after having suffered through that unfortunate revival, I could hardly have felt any lower.
I've seen community theatre and even high school productions of Damn Yankees in which the locker room scenes resembled lite gay porn - bare asses, gag shower humping, bending over for soap jokes, etc.). I have no problem with it (it's such a silly show anyway).
My only complaint is that I've never seen a really good Lola (except for Verdon in the weird movie) or Applegate. I'm surprised that these roles are so difficult to do well.
Congrats to this theatre for finding so many guys with 0% body fat, however.
