Dance or Musical Theater?

Hello, I have two quick questions which my daughter and I can’t seem to get answered anywhere online. She will be applying this fall for next September 2019 semester. Her passion has always been dance but she wants to be able to do broadway one day. Does she apply to the dance program or musical theater? If she majors in the dance program is there a way to take musical theater classes? We know she isn’t allowed to double major to do both but can she major in the one and minor in the other? She has already done the Summer High School Dance program At NYU and loved it, so we feel she probably has a better chance of getting in with her dance. Because she doesn’t have as much experience in theater as she does dance. Is she allowed to audition for both? She is stressing herself out cause she doesn’t know which department to apply for. Her dream school has alway been NYU and she has worked so hard. Hoping a clear answer might help her make a better decision.

Dance or Musical Theater?

There is no way any one can give you the definitive answer to that. It will vary from school to school - as well as thru depts. You have to ask around at the schools she is considering - and that is likely something you can start doing in the fall. Also, no way we can tell you the right choice for your daughter. Some schools with a dance program will concentrate on classical types of dance which won't include dancing for the stage.

If she goes to a school in a major city, she can always take whatever classes she's missing from the choice she's made. (ie. A ballet class if she goes MT, voice classes if she goes dance) I say cities since most of those offer classses that are of the drop in variety not requiring commitments. (Well, not voice, obv.)

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Dance or Musical Theater?

Like Dramamama said, it varies at each school. Where I did my undergrad, you could minor in dance, but not musical theater. Where I did my graduate work, minors were not required for undergraduate students and I’d guess that only about 40% of undergrads opted for one and they were always unrelated to musical theater.

What she chooses to apply as is obviously a choice only she can make, but with any highly competitive school, she will serve herself best if she auditions with her strongest skill. If she knows her singing, for example, isn’t near the level of her dancing, she shouldn’t let that hold her back.

Dance or Musical Theater?

Florida State University has a wonderful dance program (ballet, modern etc), my youngest daughter went there years ago and has danced professionally since graduating. If my memory is correct, they also had musical theater program. She was one of the first students to participate in their study abroad program in Paris which she loved !!.
