Daniel Torres - An Ode to the Sixth Apostle of Pop

If you read Daniels latest entry on his website, you will find out he is leaving Altar Boyz ... he will be missed as he is an amazing understudy and a major talent.

I will be starting a petition for the producers to let him come back when he returns at the end of July ... as dance captain and a man who has worked so hard to learn all FIVE parts ... I think it is not an outlandish request.

I actually had tears in my eyes, reading his most recent journal entry. This may be due, in part, to PMS, but it's also because (A) I freaking LIVE for those updates and (B) he seemed like such an amazing talent, and put SO much work into the show... and now he only has 2 months left with it. ;__;

Let us know when you get that petition started, carymetorent.

No, it don't make sense to me
That [he] won't be around...

re: Daniel Torres to leave Altar Boyz

okay I slept until the afternoon and I didn't sleep off this news...but I can at least be more articulate about it now.

Daniel is the reason many people went to see the show at all. He is the reason fans like us can get daily (sometimes twice daily) news about the show through his website and he keeps our passions aflame for the Boyz. He is the reason my love for the Altar Boyz has evolved to this magnitude. Look at me, I can't even help dropping lines from the show...

He has done so much for the Boyz: working out new stage presentations as their Dance Captain, learning all 5 roles(!), organizing the Altar Boyz Dance Class for BC/EFA, Easter Bonnet Competition, relentless promotions for all of their events...etc. which I have been fortunate enough to share with this fantastic and supportive Broadwayworld community. I remember how worried he was that he may have missed some emails for the dance class when we posted the wrong email address for a couple of hours. It wasn't a crisis but it was to him. :) His enthusiasm and devotion to the show is absolutely unparalleled.

What Daniel has done for the fans, I can hardly convey but I will try anyway. Nowhere have I experienced such dedicated and affectionate communication with with the fan base as I have with this show and it was almost solely due to Daniel Torres. I know the other Boyz do the best they can for us fans and words really fail us in expressing our appreciation (as they all well know from meeting us by now!) but Daniel is so immediately responsive to every single fan who musters up the nerve to talk to him that he is truly in a league of his own. How he remembers our appearances and all our names baffles me to this day. He makes us laugh; he makes us cry (with laughter); his performances give us chills. He makes us all feel like we are there with him experiencing the ups and downs of the Boyz, like we are part of the family. He is our precious link to the Altar Boyz world and I don't know how we will get along without him.

I wish him all the best in Most Wanted at Sundance this summer (all you board members from Utah please go check out the show!) but even his 3-week absence from Altar Boyz will be heartily felt by all of us. How will we fare if he's not restored to his position upon his return? He is an original Altar Boy in more ways than one and we want him reinstated! I hope the show's higher powers will hear our plea including the Big Guy upstairs.

He needs to go on to bigger and better things. He has one of the most beautiful voices I've heard lately and he doesn't belong understudying.

as true as that obviously is, i just can't bear the separation. it's like a family member going off to college or getting married. they're still there and doing better things but it's so painful. maybe that's selfish...i am happy for him with this new opportunity.

Haven't seen the show yet and really don't have much of a desire to. I don't think I'd enjoy it.

But there's SO much he can put his hands in. Dorian Gray, Caligula. He's stunningly talented.

aww i wish you'd give the show a chance iluv! maybe rush it for $21. as for Daniel, i'd like to see him in a starring role on the ABz tour actually...that would be so much fun. i know he'll do bigger and better roles like you say but the immediacy of this departure's hitting me hard. his talent SHOULD be displayed better and more often though...

Umm... what Juliet said in her long post. Daniel is responsbile for SO MUCH of the ABz fandom, and he's done everything in such a loving and professional manner.
JOHN LITHGOW I just realized, your last name is Butz! Both "Norbert" AND "Butz" are in your name! You must have gotten picked on a lot as a child!

*Has been wail-singing "O Danny Boy"*

Juliet, I couldn't've put it better myself (I'm referring to your long post). I wish I could have had the opportunity to meet him, and I made my Altarholic-who-lurks-on-the-forum friend read it, and she was as upset as I am.

But come ye baaaaack, when summer's in the meeeeadoooow, or when the vaaaalley's hushed and white with snow...

*sigh* But I do wish him the best of luck in all of his future projects. He deserves all the acclaim he can possibly get.

this is not about Daniel or the show but it is surprisingly ironic and i wanted to bump this thread to the first page. "The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys" is playing on the Sundance channel tonight. boy i feel like Someone is trying to communicate with me sometimes and i can't understand because i'm losing the signal... :)

thanks for your support ga and elizabeth

re: Daniel Torres - An Ode to the Sixth Apostle of Pop

MOST WANTED, Music and Lyrics by Mark Bennett, Book and Lyrics by Jessica Hagedorn
Directed by Michael Greif
Inspired by the short, tragic life of Andrew Cunanan and the events leading up to and surrounding the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace, MOST WANTED is a music theatre piece, which explores the cult of celebrity, the contradictions between narcissism and notoriety, issues of "passing", sexuality, class and race.

The 2005 Sundance Institute Theatre Lab runs July 11-31, in Sundance, Utah. The annual Lab is a three-week workshop which offers a diverse group of theatre artists the time, space, and support to develop new theatre work or to explore new approaches to existing scripts, without the pressure of production.

The Institute has had a long-term commitment to contemporary playwrights, stage directors and other artists for the stage. The newly redesigned Theatre Laboratory has expanded its commitment to the collaborative nature of theatre and garnered national recognition. Lab projects now range in style from choreographic-based pieces to adaptations of poetry, and from solo works to large-scale plays with music. Nearly 80 percent of the work developed at the Theatre Lab from the last four years has gone on to full production at regional theatres coast to coast and in New York.

Juliet, I agree with you. daniel torres is totally the reason that I went to see the show. I've seen the show twice and the first time that I went I was lucky enough to see Daniel's first appearance as Mark. His flan face is priceless. :)I wrote him an email about how I was too old to write a fan letter and his response was so nice. I wish he could come back to the show but I wish him luck in everything.
It's worth a shot/ :) www.freephotoiPods.com/?r=15009978
