I did the old production when both Otto Schenk and Dom DeLouise did the role, and it's really not all that free and open to improvisation, especially with opera singers not trained in improvisation. The role has to serve the show. If true, Burstein should be terrific casting.

Just got word that the role of Ida will be played by Betsy Wolfe.
ETA- I seem to remember there being a longer thread about this, but I can't find it now.

Here's an AP article about his first appearance at the Met. (they couldn't put his name in the title?) He has interesting comments about the difference between appearing on Broadway and at the Met. His casting was announced a while ago, maybe it's on the other thread. Other Broadway connections are Paulo Szot playing Dr. Falke, and Douglas Carter Beane writing a new libretto. It's all in English and the photos look great, plus other great singers, should be really good!
That Met last production shown in movie theaters, Falstaff, was fantastic. Really funny, beautiful, gorgeous singing, production looked amazing. It's still playing.
