Daphne versus Rosario

A friend and I were talking the other day about the Mimi character, and she feels that Rosario Dawson's voice is too sweet and mellifluous for a Mimi character, and that she prefers Daphne Rubin Vega's much harsher voice. At first I agreed, but the more I thought, I realized that Mimi is such a "hard" character to begin with, shes an exotic dancer/druggie with aids, but she still is young and "sweet" in a way, so in some respects, having the more fluid voice fits the character just as well! What do you guys think? I think I may just love them both!

why not? i like hearing other people's opinions on here...it's pretty cool that we can bounce stuff off of other people...some of whom have a ridiculously large anthology of broadway knowledge tucked somewhere in their heads.

some more stuff directly about this topic..

daphne was picked by johnathan larson so shes also what he was looking for.

This is a VERY talked about topic...

but let's screw around with it, i would have loved to see Daphen, or aleast another Mimi from the staged version. But then there's the "selling point"...Rosario Dawson is known. And who knows, she may surprise many of us.

I think there's definitely a sweetness to Mimi. Roger has a lot of vulnerability, and the sweetness is what he sees in her, I think. He doesn't fall in love with her because she's a hot, sexy dancer chick. Daphne had that quality, in her own way. Rosario just sounds it more. I guess we'll see how she acts the balance.

I was nervous for Rosario when i first heard she'd being doing the part of Mimi, because let's face it, Mimi's not an easy character to play. But i have more confidence in her...not full confidence, but more. And never, from the time i heard her sing that note in seasons of love, did i have any doubt in Tracie. She seems like such a lovable person.

The thing with Daphne is she had the hard edge and sexiness but was also very vulnerable and projected innocence in the role. I think Rosario will be great. I just think her take on Mimi will just be very different.

Judging from the footage that I've seen, I have very little doubt that Dawson will be excellent. She's a very, very talented actress, and can obviously sing the score.

sorry, umm i think for age purposes alone daphne couldn't have played mimi, however i wish they would have had karmine or someone else from the show instead of a "name"

I like Rosario's voice quality better. But you do have a point with the whole "Jonathon Larson picked her" thing about Daphne.

Well i dont talk to many drugged out strippers and ask them to sing for me, so i am not quite sure how they sound.

BUT just for you, i will go to the strip club this weekend on a mission :) :) :)

I met Karmine at the stage door for her last show and asked her about that. She just said she knew Jonathan before Rent, but I kind of didn't want to pursue that 'cause it seemed to bring her down a bit.

And I'm almost sure Yassmin said she was older.

Not having seen Daphne on Broadway nor Rosario in the movie yet, but having listened to them both, I'm not crazy about either. I feel Rosario is too weak (based on the soundtrack) and I feel like Daphne held back on the cast recording. That being said, and if I had to choose I would probably go with Daphne.


Also Rosario is defintely younger than Daphne and Karmine is younger than Yassmin. Updated On: 10/27/05 at 01:55 PM

i'm pretty sure yassmin is older, and i have also heard that karmine was jonathan's first choice...it would have been nice if she had at least been screen tested (not that i know for sure but the rumors were that it was jaime, rosario and...dom? i don't remember but i'm pretty sure i never heard that karmine was...anyway), ah well

What about Chita verses Bebe verses Catherine? You could do this to any musical that was revived or made into a movie.
