They just showed the Thoroughly Modern Millie Marquee on the Primetime Live Special: "Blackout 2003." It was amazing. It was just like any other night, except the marquee had no light coming from it. I feel so bad for Sutton. I know Gavin must be really upset for his old cast mates. How can Broadway survive all these crises?

I know. It's times like this that we as a nation have to pull together. And save Broadway.

OMG! Everybody buy tickets!! We have to save them!
But honestly, on a serious note, this IS costing NYC MILLIONS of dollars in tickets between the shows and the Mets game and everything else that has been cancelled. The NYC economy doesn't need another hit like that. Especially after the musician strike this year costing as much as did.

Poor Mr. Roxy. He's definitely going to have to move now. No more Hawaii trips. [Cue sad Brady Bunch theme].

How could ALL of the shows close because of a power outage??? I thought Millie was the only one. :/

I meant it is awful that this had to happen to them.

I know. Why them? I think we should take up a collection at least for all the leads in all the shows.

There were far more serious problems to contend with than just empty theaters. Imagine being stranded in a subway! I understand they were all led to safety, but those subway tunnels are pitch dark and infested with rats. Pity the elderly and those who were hospitalized!
Long Island was rather serene. All the homes in our neighborhood were lit by candles. In our case, we have a few oil lamps that were put to good use. A small battery operated radio kept us informed and we enjoyed a nice barbeque and a few chess games.
One remarkable aspect of all this was that the skies never looked more beautiful. Without ambient light the stars were brilliant and awe inspiring.
Yeah, we didn't get to see what kind of job Julie Andrews did directing THE BOYFRIEND, but we were safe and the evening had its own charms.

Dollypop,
Don't worry about those who were in hospitals, all the hospitals, except for one were safe due to their backup generators; although I worry about the elderly. I wonder how many cases of heat stroke occurred.
well on Ch 7, they showed how in this hospital in Westchester had 8 or 12,dont remember kids in life support and the generator at the hospital did not work and they were able to transfer them to one that did, but most of hte children were infants and you also have to think about the kids in incubators so not all hospital cases were fine.
Shows should be on tonight. Tonight, I go to see Hairspray- I called the box office and they are scheduled to be on tonight, so they were only dark for one night. Be thankful it wasn't longer.

That's exactly what I thought. How sick that my mind turns directly to Broadway in a crisis. Although I'm sure you can all understand.

I think it was a free plug for Thoroughly Modern Millie on national TV. I just watched NBC nightly news and the Marquis marquis and the Millie billboard were very prominent in the background of the corespondent's piece. Also on CBS news throughout last night. As a Millie fan, I made me feel good, even though I'm sad they had to miss a performance.
You're hilarious FindingNamo LOL :)

Thank you. But looks aren't everything. (Ba-dum-bum)
I feel awful that the cast of Millie didn't get to go on last night. Just awful. I've never seen it, and wouldn't. But I am really bummed for everybody. My friend in Pittsburgh tells me the tour cast did go on, which is amazing. That they could all pull together like that. And I bet I know just what Little Miss Firecracker supplied the energy for that performance!
Score a point for the sassy humored Namo

And if there were a God, it would stay dark. Dreadful show.
"Go and tell New York,
to grab a piece of Cork
and join that Blackout over Broadway!
Ev'rybody's gonna be dancin' on air,
when they hear 'em playin' 'Swanee River' in Times Square!
Ev'ry southern lass is gonna cook with gas,
and boy, that southern cookin's okay!
And when ya hear them moan -
on that slide trombone -
You'll wanna black-up for that Blackout over Broadwaaay!"
MasterLcZ, I love that. I take it it 's the verse from something.
From what? I think you have made my day!
