Has anyone ever seen him in Phantom? Was is his portrayal of the Phantom?

I saw him as Piangi, actually, and he was very good. He was playing the role full time (at least according to the program), and now it seems he's been demoted to playing the Il Muto Jeweler or something. What's up with that?

re: David Gashen in Phantom

He was playing Piangi when I saw the show back in April. But his name was on the insert in the Playbill...so he was just understudying it at that time, I assume.

Every other time, I've seen him doing the usual ensemble stuff and the Jeweller.

I haven't seen him as the Phantom...but I did hear him sing "The Music of The Night" in Bryant Park and I have to say I didn't really like him. Everyone I was with did. I thought he had a very fine voice, but something about it bored me.

He seems pretty nice from the few times I've passed him and said hello on the way to the stage door.

re: David Gashen in Phantom

Hmm...well, I saw him about two years ago opposite Howard McGillin before his "hiatus," and he was listed as being the full-time Piangi, not the understudy. But sometimes someone will temporarily take on a "full-time" position when the usual performer is on leave, i.e. Alan Tudyk in Spamalot.

I've seen him as Piangi 2 1/2 times. (The 1/2 time was when he took over after intermission; the regular Piangi was ill.)

He was excellent. Wish I could've seen him as the Phantom.

He also had fun at the stage door telling random people he had played the Phantom when he had gone on as Piangi. re: David Gashen in Phantom

re: David Gashen in Phantom

I saw him in August when Hugh Panaro was off. Didn't like Gashen. His idea of putting emotion into a song seemed to be 'just sing as loud as you can'.

He has a powerful voice, not very expressive one, but powerful.

I've got to give him this though: he did an amazing job with singing the Phantom's last lines "You alone can make my song take flight. It's over now - the music of the night!" I've never heard anyone sing the bit that well. He got big applauds before he had finished the last note.
