I went to see "Virginia Woolf" for the second time this weekend and was surprised to see that standby David Furr has taken over for David Harbour for the final weeks. I'm happy to say that his performance was top-drawer and in a few ways superior to David Harbour. His scenes with Bill Irwin in particular were played with fire-cracker intensity and he mined much more humor in these pivital exchanges. Kudos.
The performance itself was absolutely exhilirating and I am so glad I went back. I caught so many more details and nuances. This show is by far the best thing on Broadway and the work these four actors are accomplishing is nothing short of superlative. I won't bemoan its early demise, as Isherwood summed it up very well in this weekend's NYTimes - but I will urge all of you to go and spend some time with Irwin, Turner, Enos and Furr for some final rounds of "Get the Guests", "Hump the Hostess", "Humiliate the Host" and "Bringing up Baby". You won't be sorry you did.
Actually, David Harbour has taken 3 weeks off to shoot a movie and will be returning to Woolf for its final week.
I'd heard the same thing...I'm going to the closing show, so I do hope he's there!
ETA: Great to hear that Furr is excellent in the role though! So, if for some reason, David Harbour doesn't make it back, there'll be no reason to fret!
Thanks for the info - the Playbill had no mention whatsoever of David Harbour and David Furr was listed in the full cast list so I had just assumed Harbour was out altogether.
As David Furr was doing 3 (or is it 4?) straight weeks, they reprinted the playbills for him.
I didn't like David Harbour's Nick at all.

I was so surprised to see David Harbour on tv at the Tony's this year. When I was a kid, I was a volunteer at The Theatre At Monmouth in Maine and David was one of the company actors...I knew he left Maine, but I never knew what he was up to, then I saw him at the Tony's!! Very cool indeed. :)

I thought Harbour was perfect as Nick. He played him as more of an a**hole than George Segal did in the movie, which was interesting too.
Really? I thought he gave a bland, one-note performance through-and-through, and offered absolutely no depth whatsoever.
Maybe he just wasn't feelin' it that night.

I've gone twice and I felt that way twice.
