re: Debby Boone in Camelot

I posted this on another thread a while back, but this is the same theater where I saw Marilyn McCoo play Effie ten years ago.

ETA: I've seen several great productions there...Marilyn McCoo in "Dreamgirls" was not one of them.

re: Debby Boone in Camelot

Many years ago I did a summer stock production of CAMELOT. It was so long ago that the rights had just been released for this show.

Anyhow, our Lancelot was a Cuban named Montes de Oca. Yeah, he was a good-looking guy and had a terrific voice, but he had a potbelly and a thick Cuban accent. (How did they cast him?) His big song sounded like "Eeef Hever I Would Liff Jew". Of course, Guinevere is referred to as "Jenny" throughout the show. In de Oca's performance, it came out "Yenny". At the very end of the show, where Jenny is taken to a convent in JoyousGard, it came out "I'm taking Yenny to YoyousGard". I don't know how the audiences tolerated it.

To make matters worse, neither Lance nor Jenny could stand each other off-stage. He had to drink water in one of the scenes and the actress playing Jenny poured half a shaker of salt in the cup while it was sitting backstage. You had to see his expression when he sipped it onstage. To get even, he removed the zipper from her "Lusty Month Of May" costume and she had to perform the whole scene facing straight forward.

Oh, those were the days!!!!!

Oh DollyPop! What a great story! lol! But WHAT were they thinking? If Debbie Boone is Guenivere, who actually IS cast as Arthur, Lancelot etc? Love some of the suggestion so far! And now that Bob Goulet is free, maybe he could reprise his role?

To see Goulet as Lance with a jousting instrument in 1 hand & a cane in the other would be priceless

Yes! Conversing with a Guenivere who's having hot flashes!

DollyPop I love that story!!! Ya know, I am never gonna be able to listen or see Lancelot the same way again! I will always hear that thick Cuban accent coming through. lol

re: Debby Boone in Camelot

For some reason I think that God has subtracted 10-15 years off of everybody's life nowadays. 50 is not the same as it was many years ago. Dolly Parton, Goldie Hawn, Bernadette Peters are all way over 50, and they just don't look it.

I'm a rare bred. I love easy listening people (I wish there was an easy listening magazine-I can't find one anywhere!) And I like Debbie Boone.

Dolly pop- working with a cast that don't like each other is a nightmare. I once did "A Soldier's Story," and we had folks making fun of people's acting back stage. The main character didn't know half his lines. And when we'd go to the green room it was like being in a locker room after a football game. Nothing about theater or the present show was even talked about (unless it was something to insult somebody). Some months afterwards, somebody wanted us to go out to lunch together for a reunion. Nobody's calls were returned.

Oh, I like Debby Boone. Don't get me wrong and yes, I agree that 50 isn't what it use to be but still she is way too old to play Jenny. No, she doesn't look 50 but she still looks too old for the part not to mention the fact that it is too high for her vocally, is it not?

re: Debby Boone in Camelot

There are many, many 50 year old women who are in their prime vocally and as actors. (I have personal reasons for wanting to believe its the new 30!) I have nothing particular against Debbie Boone. However, I still don't think 50 is an appropriate age at which to play Guenivere, who is a young woman. Conversely, I don't want to see high school kids portraying George and Albin in La Cage either! Broadway is magical, but it is not a time warp.

Grizz, you get the award for best one-liner on the board this year!

One exception to the time warp caveat - Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I think that should be the new slogan for the website!

"Broadway is magical but it's not a time warp"

I think I may have to put that one in my pocket and pull it out when needed.

re: Debby Boone in Camelot

Ageless Debby has always had the gift of playing a women half her age. Yeeeaaaars ago I saw her at the opening night of a musical stage adaptation of "Meet Me in St. Louis" in L.A. To my surprise I was sharing an arm rest with her father when a line in the show referred to her age as 17 (she had to have been in her mid thirties). My friend let out a loud giggle which was picked up by several people in our seating area. Bless Pat, he even giggled himself. My wish is she will someday play the lead in "Annie".

Demitri -- a friend of mine also saw that production of MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, and apparently, when the ancient Debby said the line about "I've waited my whole life to be a senior," some lady in the audience snickered -- "Yeah, a senior citizen..."

re: Debby Boone in Camelot

HA HA! Too funny Michael! Yet I have to admit she was age appropriate when I saw her in "Seven Brides" and "Sound of Music" and was rather good in both. Yet I doubt she would agree to play the Mother Abyss at this point in her career even if they interpolated "You Light Up My Life" with "Climb Every Mountain".

That is really funny Michael!

Demitri2, so you were one of the 15 people that saw that God awful version of SEVEN BRIDES... too. For the life of me, I will never understand why they opted to cut all that music from the film and throw in a few less than mediocre tunes to replace them.

Well they didn't actually cut ALL the music from the film but what they added didn't help. I was glad though I got to see David-James Carroll and actually enjoyed the show slightly more than that dreadful "Singin' In The Rain" production. One good thing, as time passes there are less and less hit MGM musicals left to adapt to the stage. But I gotta admit, I was sorry that the Tommy Tune/Sandy Duncan "Easter Parade" never happened. Those two names alone made me feel it might have been an exception to the rule.

re: Debby Boone in Camelot

I totally agree!!! I would have loved for EASTER PARADE to have come to full fruition!
