Deborah Cox....should be in Dreamgirls

Posted: 6/22/05 at 2:12pm...Tracie Thoms...I love her story about being a Renthead and auditioning, etc, but she left me very dissapointed with what I saw on the Rent trailer with her singing Seasons Of Love (It was more broadway less soul). I don't think any of the Dreamgirls hopefuls have to worry about her as competition.

If by "soul" you mean the current "American Idol" showoffy, riff-happy style of singing that is as musical as a jackhammer, yes, indeed, Tracie Thoms has none of it. That's what I love about her--a pure, full sound throbbing with emotion, without undue frills. We could use a bit more of that these days.

Posted: 6/23/05 at 9:36pmI think Deborah Cox is a wonderul artist , singer and performer. I have bought plenty of her music through out the years but let's be honest, Deborah COx is too old to get any major role in Dreamgirls. Deena's alredy been casted and they want a new hot talent for Effie. That leaves only Lorell and Michelle and Miss Cox is too old to play Lorell who is the youngest member of the group and I think she is too good of a talent to waste on a role like Michelle. Now if they have revial to the stage would love to see her in it.

First off, that song is basically done the same way by all of the soloists. I'm not taling about Thoms USE of her voice (doing runs or "frills" as you call them) I'm talking about her VOICE PERIOD. You can have a soulful voice without going overboard. To me, she had very little emotion (what she had came off very plastic.) I wanted to like her too.
Kavana, you know good and well that playing a character on stage convicingly despite age is a lot easier then trying to do it in a movie. Also, if you take all that make-up off Beyonce she looks like a girl in her early 20's. By Hollywood standards she's too young to play a girl in her late teens early twenties.

Face the fact Deborah is too old for the film role but I do think she would be wonderful in the stage musical.
