I agree w/Deborah.
With Eddie Murphy, Beyonce and Jamie Foxx cast, i'm 90% certain I will NOT be seeing this. Majorly disappointed with the casting thus far.

re: Deborah Cox....should be in Dreamgirls#9
Posted: 6/18/05 at 4:06pmYeah, there is no way Deborah would be able to pull of looking younger than Beyonce, which she would have to do since Lorell is the "kid" of the group.

Deborah doesn't look that old.....and Beyonce looks alittle older than she is to me. I wonder if they'll cast MYA as Lorrel in the Dreamgirls Movie.
Well if the show goes to Broadway.....Deborah Cox would make a GREAT Deena.

Posted: 6/19/05 at 11:33pmI actually think that thus far the casting has been ideal. These people are names AND they are talented enough for their roles, giving the film a chance to be both good AND bankable. I think it is riddiculous to knock them just because they aren't broadway performers, and if that isn't your particular issue with them, then what exactly is the problem?

"Deb has a very hard look to her."
Do you ever have anything nice to say about her? If it's not Beyonce or Fantasia, NO ONE seems to be good enough for you. SMDH.
Deb was tapped to be in the revival when they planned to bring it back to Broadway before those plans got scrapped for the film.

Posted: 6/21/05 at 12:55amI personally think Tracie Thoms should get a crack at Lorrel in the movie, especially since I think she'll take off in the "Rent" movie (even if the movie itself doesn't.) Of course, Beyonce would probably never allow that, since Tracie has much more presence and would steal the movie from her. Also, Tracie is still a little young to be playing love scenes with Eddie Murphy without ickiness.

I'm a fan of Deborah. But unlike so many posters, I tell what I feel is the truth about a perfomer regardless of whether I'm a fan of their's or not. Deborah could possibly be in Dreamgirls on stage, but film is another venue. It's easier to hide age on stage. She has never had the girlish quality/sass that Lorell requires even when she was younger (I can't see her playing Lorell on stage either.) At this point, I can't see Deborah getting any major role in this film. They already have their names to fill seats and for the talent, there are hundreds of other unknown performers that would sing and act Deb under the table. She's just stuck in the middle.
I'm all for Deb being in other projects, I just don't think her voice/look/acting skills fit well with any of the major roles in Dreamgirls. That being said, I hope that Deb finds a project that will fit her particular talents.

Posted: 6/22/05 at 2:44amFirst of all, Marquise, get bent. I've worked with Tracie Thoms and know firsthand the power and presence she has. As for Beyonce, if "Goldmember" was any indication, she has the screen presence of a frozen fish stick. That isn't "bashing", it's a simple fact. Deal.

I like Deborah Cox, but her age (despite how good she looks, she still looks like someone who is 25-35) would make her seem obtuse in the film if she was playing one of members of the group. She could perhaps just play another performer of the period, though.
It's fun to speculate on these things, but what we think probably doesn't much matter overall. I do however wonder if the people involved in the casting and producing of the film ever read this board.

I wouldn't judge someone's acting ability based on their performance in Goldmember.
