Any chance I can get tickets to anything???

I just moved out here (near the city) and am remarkably unfamiliar with how things like student rush, lottery, etc work.

I did a search before posting this, but couldn't find the details I wanted.

How do I go about showing up in NYC at 5 pm to see a show if I don't already have tickets? Just go to the theater and hope they'll sell me one?

... don't laugh at my ignorance, please. =) hahaha.

No Shame in being new to NY...we were all there at one point, even the most jaded of us! Go to TKTS, the discount ticket booth located underneath the Marriot Marquis in Times Square. They will have a large selection of discount seats for the night's performances. If you are not particular about what show to see, it is a good jumping off point. This time of year, and with our current situation, virtually nothing worth seeing is selling out. Go to the TKTS booth, they will have almost everything.

Like everyone else said, the TKTS booth. Everytime I have been there recently, lots of shows have been up. If you have a specific show in mind too, you could check for discounts through Playbill.com. You can sign up for that for free, and bring the printed offer to the box office of the theater.

If you're getting to the city at 5, you might have time to try some lotteries if you're up for it (Hairspray, TOS, Wicked, ITH). Also check out sites with discount codes, but I have found that TKTS has better last minute seats than the box office does.
