That sounds great, I'll be the first to buy tickets.
Ugh.
Princeton, best12, and MB, you are making my life.
I agree that this sounds a little too innovative for my tastes. But who knows? Weider things have worked.
Man there's another musical's death because people feel the need to change it. Why?
You CAN'T just sell anything "as is." Who wants "as is" these days?
This is the age of "House Flippers."
Cover the "old" up with "new" so no one can see it anymore... renovate, reinvigorate, jack up the prices, and ship it off to potential buyers.
EDIT: That's why I was so excited about the Chorus Line revival...

totally different. chorus line is an iconic slice of life piece.
The Wiz isn't. All of the pieces of the wiza re VERY datinga nd wouldn't fly with an audience today

Ok, I personally know nothing about this show, besides the basic premise, and a few other small tidbits, does the movie represent it well? Or should I just get the cast recording?

the movie doesn't represent the show in ANY way shape or form.

Relax best12bars the new wiz production in the netherlands will be based on the original the Wiz production.
And Kansas will remain Kansas just look at this no Harlem at all, right

Looking foreward to the lajolla production too, i am a real strong supporter of looking to a production from another angle and concept, i can see The Wiz working in a in concert concept.
And let's be fair the new production of Sweeney Todd was a real stunner and artisticly and commercially a succes, time will tell

There is a clip on "the site no one wants to mention" (rhymes with "Ewe Toob") of the Netherland's "The Wiz" cast singing "Ease On Down The Road", and "Home". They look fantastic, and the Dorothy is wonderful. Despite all the crap everyone talks about the movie, the thing that really made the movie great for me were the brilliant orchestrations by Quincy Jones. I'd love to see those survive in an American production - and they do, in the Netherland's upcoming revival.
And, to see pictures from this revival, go to:

Costumes and makeup look fantastic. Even our own American Vanessa Williams got on The Wiz train!

i seen the picture of the set. it does look very concert like, but i think it will work out...i hope.
I have a question. Has your friend been to any of the rehearsels yet? I wanted to know how the cast members are, specifically Nikki James..
"Relax best12bars the new wiz production in the netherlands will be based on the original the Wiz production."
Gee, thanks. I'd love to.
But what the hell was I reading and looking at here, then? (from the Page 1 thread posting):

The first link says it's based in part on the 1978 movie (that would be the Sidney Lumet travesty), and the key art for the show on the second site, shows them in front of an urban "big city" Manhattan-type skyline... just like that Wiz movie. Manhattan has NO part in the original stage show of The Wiz. It's set in Kansas and Oz. Not Harlem and an Ozzy NYC.
If I cringed prematurely, it's easy to understand why.
Well, if you are asking questions, I'd love to hear what the orchestrations are like and if they are cutting any songs.
The only cast memeber she really spoke about was the replacement for Wayne Brady. She says he can dance and sing EXTREMELY well.
For the question about the orchestrations, she said they are modifying alot of them to make the songs feel more "current".
But I shall ask her to go more in depth when I see her tomorrow.
P.S. Oh, and she told me why Brady dropped out. Apparently, he was not willing to commit 100% to the show. He said if there was a high paying one night only even in Vegas, he would skip rehearsals for one day to do that.
Then it's a good thing they gave the role to Rashad Naylor, he deserves it! I'm intrigued by all these new ideas...can't wait to see pics!
This info is not INSIDE SOURCE material. Non of these "earth shaking" spoilers are new. Each one of them have been printed in stories on Playbill.com. Everything from the environmental staging, the rock concert feel, the monitors, the Toto and the Toto cam are months old news. I'm suprised the poster didn't break the news that the Yellow Brick Road goes thru the audience.
If you're going to say something is from an inside source, at least make sure it hasn't already been covered.
Here's an official article from the playhouse:
LA JOLLA PLAYHOUSE'S YOUNG PROFESSIONALS GROUP
Performance & Cocktails
PRESENTS THE WIZ
Saturday, September 30, 2006
LA JOLLA, CA (August 23, 2006) - Fall is approaching, and the lazy days of summer are ending. Time to pack up your beach chairs, break out the self-tanner and resign yourself to nights in, right? Wrong. Refill your social calendar at La Jolla Playhouse! Get out on the town with Performance & Cocktails, a young professionals group designed for those seeking a retreat from the usual night out.
For $34 - half off a regularly priced theatre ticket! - young patrons (21 and up) can enjoy an all-inclusive night of drinks, gourmet eats and admission to a world-class musical. The group will begin the night at luxurious hotspot Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa for drinks and hors d'oeuvres. They'll mingle, network and relax, then see the highly-anticipated musical spectacular The Wiz at the Tony Award®-winning La Jolla Playhouse. Post-show, beer will be provided by Karl Strauss. This event has a value of over $100!
Based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, with a book by William F. Brown, and music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls, director Des McAnuff's Wiz is a major re-envisioning for the 21st century. When The Wizard of Oz met the urban beat of the 1970s, history was made to the tune of seven Tony Awards®. Now the young Dorothy travels to the strange and spectacular Land of Oz once again as McAnuff teams up with original Wiz orchestrator Harold Wheeler to create a re-imagined, multi-cultural musical phenomenon for a new century.
McAnuff, fresh off a Best Musical Tony® win for the Four Seasons musical Jersey Boys, will, along with set designer Robert Brill, employ theories of "environmental design." The audience will enter into a place that is part theatre, part musical and even part rock concert, becoming a part of a dynamic setting that puts the performers and the music at the forefront of this heightened theatrical experience. The show stars In Living Color vet David Alan Grier as The Wiz and Broadway regulars Nikki M. James (All Shook Up) as Dorothy, Tituss Burgess (Jersey Boys) as Lion, Michael Benjamin Washington (Mamma Mia!) as Tin Man and Rashad Naylor (Hairspray) as Scarecrow.
Named one of the "World's Hottest New Hotels for 2005/06" by Condé Nast Traveler, Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa is a different kind of hotel experience: it's an inspired La Jolla destination comprised of a luxury hotel, a world-class spa and an unparalleled restaurant experience. A California-rancho style setting in an idyllic coastal town, Estancia La Jolla exists in harmony with nature, inviting guests to experience a heightened sense of well-being amidst an eclectic blend of tradition, contemporary comforts and modern-day sophistication.
The event, taking place on Saturday, September 30, begins at 5:30pm with a pre-party at Estancia La Jolla Hotel & Spa, including hors d'oeuvres and drinks; at 8pm is a performance of The Wiz at La Jolla Playhouse; post-show drinks and mingling will take place on the VIP deck of the Mandell Weiss Theatre.
Tickets are available online at http://www.lajollaplayhouse.com/pandc or by contacting Jill McIntyre at 858.228.3092 or jmcintyre@ljp.org. Photographers/social columnists welcome. (Pre-productions photos for The Wiz will be available next week.)
