Gotta side with SADM. Denise was painfully crude in RR. She was the puce coloured icing on the smelly brown cake.

Denise van Outen was okay at best in Rent - while Luke Evans and Francesca Jackson were outstanding.
I suppose she could play the part of Christine if she mimed to someone else's vocals. (sorry - feeling unnaturally bitchy today lol)

"NOTE: A spokesperson for Lloyd Webber has told Whatsonstage.com that Van Outen is in fact not in talks for a role in the Phantom sequel. Too bad for any Denise fans!"

re: Denise Van Outen could be Christine!

DVO was a travesty in RR. She just played herself and increased the show running time like every night (had a great chat with a couple of ushers about this! the cast were pissed off with her aswell!), and have to say that her understudy CJ was an amazing Maureen, and can't believe they took the role off of her to give it to DVO!!

And yeah hands down, best thing about that production, Luke Evans and Francesca Jackson!! No-one else came close.

I HOPE this isn't true, and it's just London Lite trying to shift papers, because that would be a disaster. I could watch John Barrowman in the male lead though, have seen him on stage and he's marvellous.

re: Denise Van Outen could be Christine!

This was always a ridiculous suggestion. She wouldn't have the right kind of voice for Christine (assuming some similarity to the original). And I remember hearing that comment about a role of a lifetime (not sure even quoted correctly), but it was ages ago, and actually coincided with talk at the time re Xanadu. And I rather thought there might have been been some basis in that as a possibility. But had it been anything to do with the Phantom sequel, there is no way in the world she would have risked putting ALW offside by referring to it, even obliquely.

But whatever the Phantom sequel ends up as, I would imagine there is a fairly good chance that something from it will get publicly premiered at the ALW Party in the Park. Probably some of what was at Sydmonton.

Webbers office was going crazy the other day just hours before this broke- so untrue about dear denise but she can dream. Then again, it could turn out to be a leek too soon!
I pray not!

Not fair on DVO, this! This was nothing to do with her, and it sounds as if she will take flack for it. It was irresponsible of WOS to have picked up on what was just an obvious hack rehash of things article, to effect, for their own purposes. It was obvious rubbish. But WOS running with it suddenly appeared to give the rubbish some inappropriate credibility.

re: Denise Van Outen could be Christine!

Im pretty sure she wont take any flack or loose any sleep over it, i don't think anyone cares enough

I'm so glad I decided against going to see Rent Remixed.

Out of interest, as I don't recall ever seeing her perform, but is DVO actually any good? She can sing...but from clips I've seen it doesn't sound that great.

She is a really good tv personality though. I like her =)

re: Denise Van Outen could be Christine!

That was very shallow and unnecessary, songanddanceman2. I would imagine she cares! The inference has been that she has talked inappropriately, whether misquoted or not, when she is one of the few who is presumed to know a fair bit about the sequel and is in a position of trust. ALW wouldn't take kindly to perceived abuse of such trust.

And I am a little confused Wicked one re when ALW's office went crazy. It is only curiosity, but was it before WOS ran with the insinuations of the rehash article in the London Lite rag, or before that article? It wouldn't surprise me at all that ALW's office expressed displeasure to WOS. It was irresponsible, and there might have been some suspicion that there had been a more serious leak of the kind you don't eat (lol!).

It is interesting though that rumour re John Barrowman has never been met with any such denial!

But I didn't see Rent or Chicago myself when she was in it, so can't comment. But she was good in "Tell me on a Sunday", albeit not amazing.

I believe it was with London Lite they were mad about as that would have been seen by millions that night!

re: Denise Van Outen could be Christine!

ladybegood dont be so OTT it was a joke

It was a theatre rumor about casting someone who turns out not to be cast in that role at all, it happens everyday.Names are attached in the press then fade away quickly, this one is no different.

toanythingtaboo 2 she can sing and has a pretty good voice, but in Rent Dumbed Down she was embarrassing

re: Denise Van Outen could be Christine!

It has been slightly different actually, in that it is not usual to have such rumours so promptly and actively denied! As the Wicked one implied above, it does slightly make one wonder if there isn't something sensitive in there.

And much as it is probably unecessary to make an issue of it, being accused of being OTT as if I was wrong to call a spade a spade, rather demands it. You didn't make a joke before, songanddanceman2. You were just being snide! Children often go through a phase of trying to excuse themselves by claiming whatever unpleasantness was said was supposed to be funny. But it doesn't mean they really did intend it to be funny. And I don't think you're a child. And just because snide isn't that uncommon on the likes of this, doesn't mean it should never get called for what it is.

Jeez!
Is this the Broadway board or the wonderful West End?

re: Denise Van Outen could be Christine!

To be honest ladybegood, i saw the funny side in the post, SANDM2 wasnt being snide or horrible. He was simply stating that so many rumours fly about everyday that people just dont care because 9/10 they're wrong, it was a joke, it was funny. Dont try and make something of it and detract from the subject because it will annoy a lot of people, we dont want this turning into one of them broadway board threads!

re: Denise Van Outen could be Christine!

Firstly im 29 years old so please don't try to be patronizing as its embarrassing and insulting.

It was a joke, i don't get why ANYBODY would make a big deal about the fact that a name was attached a show that turned out not to be true....do you follow theatre?, do you not see this happen ALL the time.

Denise will have forgotten this stupid little rumor before you will have.
Am i missing something here???

Exactly! This was going in that exact direction.

re: Denise Van Outen could be Christine!

I repeat, this was slightly unusual in that no one bothers to get such rumours so promptly and actively denied! As the Wicked one implied somewhere above, it does slightly make one wonder if there wasn't something sensitive in there somewhere.

It isn't quite the same thing but in a way one can compare this to the ludicrous speculation there was that the Rhydian X-Factor person was going to play the new phantom. I suppose they thought the nonsense would go away soon enough, but that was actively denied in the end as well. But it took ages to get around to it.

But I am not trying to make trouble. And I have learnt my lesson. As someone who doesn't post very often, one must just pretend not to recognise when/if anything is a little untoward. Call it a day though now please!
