The most depressing finale I ever saw -- and it was depressing because it was so frikkin' weak -- was PIPPIN.
"Ta Da!"
WTF?
I think depressing isn't bad, its just different from Happy. hahah, SO profound.
My votes are for Blood Brothers, Grand Hotel, Sweeney Todd and i agree with all of the other shows that were named, well MOST of them.

Definitely "Blood Brothers"
What about "Assassins"? Granted, the final song is more chilling than depressing, but taken as a conclusion to a piece that examines our country in that light...it is pretty depressing.

I think Gypsy is pretty damm depressing in aspects. If you really think about it.
Sweeney Todd, West Side Story, Falsettos, King and I.
I was depressed at the ending of Cats too, I realized I had wasted money and time on a worthless show.
MILLIE. I was hoping Mrs. Meers would return and send the entire cast off to Shanghai.
My vote goes to Miss Saigon. It is the only one i can classify as SAD !(Although I adore this show). And i have to disagree with Aida, in my opinion the ending is very optimistic and uplifting if you think about it.
Take care
Wicked is my #1 most depressing ending.
When I say depressing, I mean there was something about the ending that just leaves you feeling *depressed.* Not that it's a miserably sad ending, it just leaves you feeling disatisfied, not with the show, but the outcome. Hard to explain.
Spoiler.......
AIDA would've been depressing if it weren't for the *second* ending, with Radames and Aida's reincarnations finding each other. I love that ending personally, it's very uplifting and leaves you in a good mood even though the stars did die. I don't think it's a cop-out at all, nor do I think it's depressing.

I have always said that if Maria died as well in West Side Story, it really wouldn't have been sad. I'm weird like that...Romeo and Juliet doesn't make me sad AT ALL, but West Side Story makes me cry every time. However, when the Shark boys catch Tony's body at the end and the Jet puts Maria's scarf on her head...leaves you with a lot of hope.
However, I've always liked to imagine that they realize Tony's breathing after the credits start rolling, get him to the hospital and he's completely fine...and they decide not to try him for murder or anything...:)
