In the January 11th Playbill.com article on 'The Little Mermaid's' opening night, Stephen Schwartz discusses 'Der Glockner':

Composer Stephen Schwartz, whose Wicked shares a common demographic with the Chicklet of the Sea, owes a couple of Oscars to Disney films, so one can't help wondering when his Disney-animated film will turn into a Broadway musical.

"I think we're starting up Hunchback of Notre Dame, hopefully, next year. Rumor has reached my ear that it's happening."

It would be nice if Disney made the sensible choice for their next Broadway venture, instead of doing something ridiculous like 'Aladdin'. This one is ripe for a New York transfer! Does anyone know anything further regarding plans of a Broadway transfer?

All I do know about this show in NY is that it was rehersed in NY before going over to Germany. And, that did start up talk about if it was going to be playing in NY. Disney said that it wasn't going to bring it to NY because they thought that the story was "too dark" for Broadway audiences.

However, this was before they co produced Mary Poppins in London. Where, during the London run, they went out of their way to tell parents to keep the kids at home because the show would be too dark for them. However, the show didn't come with the same warning when it played on Broadway. So, I don't know if thier views etc have changed over the years. They could have I don't know.

I'd already heard all of that, but apparently there's renewed interest in a New York run.

I was hoping Smaxie or someone else in the know might be able to shed a little light.

I would love to throw away my money to Disney to see it on Broadway, or where ever they choose to do it. I could see them doing it in London first.

Broadway Shows I've Seen: Hairspray, Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors (2003), The Wedding Singer, Spamalot, Riverdance, Rent, Beauty and the Beast, Spring Awakening, Wicked, Legally Blonde, Phantom of the Opera, Sweet Charity (revival), Drowsy Chaperone, The Lion King, Dreamgirls(2010 Tour).

I saw the German production in Berlin. Liked it a lot although I thought it needed work. I think there is huge potential here though and wish that it does make it to Broadway.

The Man in the Ceiling has been the next Disney musical to hit Broadway forever - since even before Little Mermaid, but I've heard of nothing about it since it was first mentioned.

This is a rumor coming directly from the mouth of the lyricist of the show, which I find very exciting. He said it was a rumor, so it might not even be true - but I think it's a logical choice for Broadway since it's already been transferred to the stage. I do hope they keep the darkness of the stage version though, IF it ever does open here.

ENCHANTED will be the next Disney musical to hit Broadway. I doubt Hunchback of Notre Dame will ever hit Broadway although Disney may choose to license it regionally

"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"

It could be stellar. Especially if they some how incorporated the house of the theater into the "cathedral" design of the set.

What makes you think 'Enchanted' is happening? I was asking what will be next, not what would you like to be next.

I heard about the Lippa musical a while ago and it sounds intriguing. I'm excited that Disney is taking on a new, original source. It would really be a shame though, if Hunchback never went straight to regional and community companies without getting the opportunity to play New York. I think it could be truly spectacular.
