Is the cast recording of Dessa Rose worth picking up? I have been thinking of getting it but it is quite pricey.

Absolutely. It's almost the entire show on 2 cds. The music is wonderful and the performances are amazing across the board.
It's also extravagantly packaged in a hardback book with full libretto.
Having recently seen the show on video, I will say the experience of listening to it was more satisfying than actually seeing it.
Highly recommended, imo,

In my opinion, it contains some of the best music that Ahrens and Flaherty have ever written ("Something of My Own," "At the Glen," "Twelve Children"). LaChanze, Rachel York and Norm Lewis are all phenomenal. I actually use the novel on which the musical is based for a class I teach on African-American literature, and I usually end up playing the score for my students. It's really wonderful.
