Is the cast recording of Dessa Rose worth picking up? I have been thinking of getting it but it is quite pricey.

Absolutely. It's almost the entire show on 2 cds. The music is wonderful and the performances are amazing across the board.
It's also extravagantly packaged in a hardback book with full libretto.

Having recently seen the show on video, I will say the experience of listening to it was more satisfying than actually seeing it.

Highly recommended, imo,

I completely second Tazber. It's definitely a necessary edition to your cast album collection. In my opinion, it contains some of the best music that Ahrens and Flaherty have ever written ("Something of My Own," "At the Glen," "Twelve Children"). LaChanze, Rachel York and Norm Lewis are all phenomenal. I actually use the novel on which the musical is based for a class I teach on African-American literature, and I usually end up playing the score for my students. It's really wonderful.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body
