How is it? Is it worth the $30-$40?
I'm very sceptic about buying it because of how expensive it is.
A lot of people are going to come on here and tell you it's great. I haven't listened to it once since I bought it when it came out...If you don't have it, get Ragtime instead. It's much much better.
It is brilliant and totally wrth the $40 I paid. I *love* this recording.
(but i agree with jasonf: if you don't have Ragtime yet, get that first)

Well, I'm one of those people who will tell you that it's great. I have listened to it many, many times since I bought it, and it is well worth the investment. It doesn't have to be either/or between Dessa Rose and Ragtime. Both are wonderful.
I am so glad that the magnificent performances by LaChanze and Rachel York were preserved in their entirety on this two CD set. You can hear every emotion in the dialog, and their singing is just superb. LaChanze's "Twelve Children" and Rachel's "At the Glen" are stunning. The whole cast is great, and the music is really, really good.
Why not check to see if it's available at your local library first? You can listen first, then decide if you want to buy it. If your library doesn't have it, put in a request. They may just buy it on your recommendation.
