The economics of the theatre are sometimes as fascinating as the productions that transpire on stage. Numerous musicals shuttered earlier than expected, packing their bags due to poor ticket sales and reviews, while others eclipsed even their most confident producers' dreams and desires. As part of a forthcoming investigation, I wish to pinpoint the specific, objective factors that are correlated with the lifetime (number of performances) of a show on "The Great White Way."
Others have suggested that (1) whether or not the product is an original production or a revival, (2) whether or not the product is a musical or "straight" play, (3) whether or not the product received critical acclaim (newspaper reviews and "Tony Award" nominations), and (4) the attendance of the show during its first week might be linked to its imminent success. Which factors do you, BroadwayWorld.Com brethren, believe could influence the length that a production graces the great Broadway stage?
All responses will be of assistance, and are quite appreciated.
