Did "THE PRODUCERS" Deserve the Tony's?

I think it deserved just about every award it won.

I do think that Choreography should have gone to The Full Monty, Kathleen Freeman should have won Best Featured Actress, and POSSIBLY Best Score (All three: The Producers, The Full Monty, and A Class Act had amazing scores)

"Once Lane and Broderick left, you realized how weak the material was without people who could properly do perform it."

Which is exactly why it didn't deserve all those other awards.

Still, I'm not complaining, it was wildly entertaining.

....but the world goes 'round

I hate me some Producers, so no, I don't think it should have won a few of those awards.

One time, Patti LuPone punched me in the face...

It was awesome.

The show is ok...deserving of 12? No.

Best Actor, I'll give it that. Costumes, sure. Some of the others...debateable...very debateable.

And, to whomever said Rocky Horror-
Um...not really...they broke with some on Riff Raff, Magenta and Columbia, sure...but Brad, Janet, Dr. Scott and Frank looked MUCH like the film.

I think that Costumes, Sets, Lighting should have gone to "42nd Street." "42nd Street" was so opulent....all the design aspects of the show....gorgeous! It also should have won Best Choer(sp?), too. Maybe, even orchestrations???

I would have liked "The Full Monty" to have gotten something, as it was such a terrific show. But, after 9/11 NYC theatre suffered....a lot! Not "The Producers," though. It had such a HUGE advance that it wasn't affected at all.

IMO, Cady Huffman shouldn't have won Best Featured Actress. It should have gone to Kathleen Freeman in "The Full Monty."

I didn't like The Producers that much, but I think it was the LA cast Alexander/Short. As for score- The Full Monty. So all 12- NO.

9/10 - Next To Normal, Ensemble Theatre
9/18 - Brian Stokes Mitchell, Cincy Pop's
9/28 - Death Of A Salesman, Wright State

The Full Monty should've won Best Musical that year.

IMO....it was really a toss up between TP or TFM for Best Musical. Both were so wonderful....in so many different ways.

The reason why I choose The Full Monty is that though both were such perfectly cast, smooth, tight, well done productions, when it came down to the caliber of the material, The Full Monty just did it for me. The Producers' book is the best part about it and it's mainly because it takes small liberties with the original screenplay. No complaining here though, I found it very funny and even cried from laughing a few times. But I thought that The Full Monty was an actual musical adaptation of the movie. As in, everything about the story and the characters were perfect for the stage and nothing had to be forced. Whereas The Producers wasn't as smooth a transition. I know I'm in the minority about this, but that's what I seriously believe.

I feel there are many boring moments in this show... Have you heard "TIL HIM"?

And set design?

HUH? WHAT?

When I saw the show and read that it won BEST SET DESIGN, I was shocked.

I do agree that TFM had more character developement than TP. Everything with TP was over the top....not that that's bad. That's the whole point of the show...and it worked.

I'm not a huge fan of the show, but yes, it deserved Best Musical and Actor, Featured Actor, Costumes, etc. but The Full Monty deserved Best Score. I think the lyrics are incredible, and it has become one of my favorite scores of the past ten years.

'Til Him is one of the most pleasant male-male heterosexual love songs written for the stage....it just slows down the show's momentum.

my story:
we bought rush tickets to see TP and sat in front mezz. from the moment theow w curtain went up, i decided that i wanted to be an ensemble member of a broadway show when i got older. i was very excited about tony danza, although his singing dissapointed me greatly. hunter foster was GREAT, he turned "i want to be a producer" from a mediocre song i had heard on the OBCR to a magnificant number. yes, the producers made fun of almost everything possible, but that was the magic of it, and what made it so funny. i laughed every moment of the show! during spring time for hitler, i was in awe the whole time. i had never seen anything like it. i was so happy that the producers had been my second broadway experieince. when i got home, i logged onto BWW and saw an article saying the producers was to be closing april 22nd. although i was beyond sad, although i was so proud and happy i had had such a great experience and was able to be a part of that much-lost theater extravaganza, yes, very rogers and hammerstein. to me, it was like the definition of what a broadway show should be(chorus girls, funny plot, great score and book etc.)i know i will never forget the producers and i know i will always remember that it changed my life forever. on april 22nd and the following couple of weeks, BWW or broadway.com, playbill.com, NOTHING seemed to have a major article on the closing of the producers. it seemd like it had just slipped out of thin air. this made me very upset and dissapointed. anyway, i just wanted to say i think the producers deserved all of those tony's and that the producers is a great example for future shows to follow.

"it harkened back to the days of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Learner and Loewe, etc."

No it didn't.

"I do think Rodgers and Hammerstein and Learner and Loewe would be offended by that."

I don't know about that.

It certainly deserved Best Musical, Best Book, Best Actor, The Tech Categories (Orchestrations included), Featured Actor and even Featured Actress (Though Kathleen Freeman was a riot!), but I'm a little iffy about score. I guess it's a little better than The Full Monty.
And as for director and choreographer- God yes. Stroman's work on that show was brilliant.

TIL HIM slows down the shows momentum so much, and yes, it is the shows most boring number. Not many can dispute with that.

I'm the opposite, wickedfan. I think The Full Monty suffered the most from having a very cinematic book. The transition and book changes that were made from film to stage were not enough for me. There were still a lot of short little cinematic scenes that worked fine in the film, because you can just jump from scene to scene on film and have short little one minute scenes and it's okay, but on stage that didn't work for me.

I thought that the little scenes involving Malcolm and his mother among many others, were great. They were little touches that let us get to know these men. Not to mention it made Malcolm's "You Walk With Me" all the more heartbreaking.

"Full Monty" should have won for best score.

I know that "Producers" was the hit of all time. It just seems like the voters thought "Hey, we've never given one show every award that it was nominated for! Let's do it!"

Exactly why it didn't deserve most of it's awards.

Hey, they couldn't give them every award. They were up against themselves in several acting categories.
