Did anybody else here see the MTG Wild Party in LA?

It was truly one of the best nights of LA theatre in months. Absolutely brilliant!
"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"

I'm not trying to rub it in, but a friend of mine who's a critic (and finds fault in everything) was practically speechless. This is the first time I have heard her not find a fault in a show. She was completely and totally blown away, and so was I.

The audience was filled with theatre folks. We were sitting next to Kelly Estrella, the General Manager of Reprise and near us were Kevin Earley and Douglas Sills (not sitting together). We tried to fish gossip about next season from Kelly but she pleaded the 5th.

I was there last night. I was so anxious to see Eric Anderson in that role since I just did Ragtime with him. He was fantastic and Tami Tappan was FLAWLESS! That woman is starring in Guys and Dolls as Sarah freaking Brown AND she sang a brilliant Queenie! One person should not be able to do both of those roles so amazingly. NOT FAIR! (As someone who would kill to do that, I am crazy jealous! re: Did anybody else here see the MTG Wild Party in LA? ) Misty Cotton was a great Kate but as much as I love David Engel, he was terribly miscast as Black. Have him sing Gershwin and I'm happy. Have him sing "Juggernaut" and "I'll Be Here?" No bueno. He is the opposite of soulful and my boyfriend and I actually giggled when he sang "I'm available and I'd love to dance" in perfect, straight rhythm, sounding devoid of all things smooth and blues-y which that part demands. Other than that and a few obvious (if you know the show) lyric flubs, (which you can't blame them for! They did this reading in early June, then had one pick up rehearsal earlier in the day for last night's performnace) it was really great! And quite the night of who's-who in LA theater.
It was the Lippa version, btw.

This was the second an final performance. MTG does "concert staged readings," kind of like Encores in New York. They've been doing a maximum of 4 performances, in 3 venues. TWP was originally scheduled for a one performance only night at the Alex Theater in Glendale. Because of the tremendous reaction, they scheduled one more performance, last night. So this one...unfortunately...you missed. re: Did anybody else here see the MTG Wild Party in LA?

Have you heard Tami's CD? It has some pretty amazing tracks. She can basically do no wrong. I did "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" with her a few years back, and she sang the bejesus out of Millie.
Love me some Tami Tappan.
