I was there last night. I was so anxious to see Eric Anderson in that role since I just did Ragtime with him. He was fantastic and Tami Tappan was FLAWLESS! That woman is starring in Guys and Dolls as Sarah freaking Brown AND she sang a brilliant Queenie! One person should not be able to do both of those roles so amazingly. NOT FAIR! (As someone who would kill to do that, I am crazy jealous!

) Misty Cotton was a great Kate but as much as I love David Engel, he was terribly miscast as Black. Have him sing Gershwin and I'm happy. Have him sing "Juggernaut" and "I'll Be Here?" No bueno. He is the opposite of soulful and my boyfriend and I actually giggled when he sang "I'm available and I'd love to dance" in perfect, straight rhythm, sounding devoid of all things smooth and blues-y which that part demands. Other than that and a few obvious (if you know the show) lyric flubs, (which you can't blame them for! They did this reading in early June, then had one pick up rehearsal earlier in the day for last night's performnace) it was really great! And quite the night of who's-who in LA theater.
It was the Lippa version, btw.
