All the stuff you guys are saying is making me turn into a stupid, squealing little fangirl.
I am SO excited to see this show and I'm sure it'll get brushed up by the time it opens.
Eeee! Norbert! Okay, I'm done. Haha.

Gleason deserves one too, along with the lead. I liked Gleasons line while the balcony moved offstage - "is the balcony moving???" lol

Derek - there's a song list on Page 1 of the thread.
All the good buzz about this show is making me so excited! I'm not going to get to see it unless a miracle happens, so I'm anxiously awaiting a recording :)

Saw it, loved it, bought the t shirt (literally)
I went to the first preview as well and although there are plenty of reviews I'll just make some quick observations....
I know in a Norbert gave an interview in which he said something about the director constantly reminding them that THEY are not funny, the material is funny. I must say, it's my opinion BOTH are hysterical. The main cast is in top form. Norbert IS a standout, no doubt but John and Sherie aren't far behind at all. The three of them are simply hysterical. This only adds to my evidence to my idea that Sherie has a amazing gift for comedy and it's great to see her in action. Defintely recomended.
P.S Did anyone else notice the changes they made from the San Diego production for "Here I Am?"

Posted: 2/2/05 at 3:32amAs I mentioned before, I saw the first performance after the official opening night for critics in San Diego. Already the show was amazing, winning an immediate and enthusiastic standing ovation. What I find very interesting is how little seems to have changed in the months since I saw the show. The current song list is exactly the same songs/same order all the way to the reprise of Like Zis/Like Zat. After that there appear to be only two new songs. In place of "Above the Waist" and "The Soap" (can't remember what those were about) are the now featured "Son of Great Big Stuff" and "The Reckoning," which sound better just from the titles. My program lists the final two songs as "Dirty, Rotten..." and "Give Them What They Want (Reprise)" and the current final two are "Dirty Rotten Number" and "Finale" (so maybe pretty much the same). All in all, this would seem to indicate a pretty strong show with very little need to make changes, at least in the songs. Regarding some above comments, Sara G.'s part is indeed smallish (but with a real show-stopping song and a sure-thing Tony nod for Best Supporting Actress)--but that's as it should be. She's merely one of the first victims. I liked John L., but this is indeed Norbert Leo's show--he steals every scene he's in, and will finally become the Broadway superstar he deserves to be. Sherie Rene makes a rather late entrance for a starring role, so though she does have the main female role, her part is much smaller than John's and Norbert's. She'll probably be up for Best Actress, if only not to be in competition with Sara.

I'll have to get tickets now after it opens to see if they change anything from first night of previews that I saw. Did the same thing for Boy From Oz, and they changed a LOT. I expect little or no chnages for this one, it's great the way it is!!! Another winner for the Imperial!
Side note - I noticed you can actually buy tickets (even at discount, second row!!!) today for tonight's opening night of Good Vibrations. I passed since I already saw it once, and have tickets for next month (if it lasts that long) to see how it changed. Anyone going tonight?

thespian geek--
I don't know if this will do anything for you, but I thought I'd share: I saw Norbert in "Wicked" the first evening back after being out for his injury. I was looking forward to seeing him perform, as I knew how beloved he was as a performer. He did not disappoint, great voice and totally believable in the role. (I never understood people who either criticized him, his dancing or his performance in this role, BTW.)
At the very end of the show, when the curtain was coming down to the strains of "Defying Gravity", I noticed Norbert doing a little athletic, pump thrusting jump into the air, like "Awwright, I did it!" It was adorable, and it was clear at his entrance and curtain call he had lots of enthusiastic fans in the audience.
Can't wait to see him and "DRS" in March!!

It's great when a show gets across the board raves - let's hope this is the case.
Do you think with Yazbek has a chance at Best Score? Adam Guettel is my favorite young composer and it certainly could be tough competition for Tony judges given the difference of material. But I think Yazbek could have a shot at it, considering he deserved it in 2001. If I had my druthers, Guettel would win - but considering the show, you never know. Q beat Caroline for score.

Posted: 2/2/05 at 1:58pmMonday night, did anyone else catch Norbert slipping on whatever it was that fell off of John Lithgow's hat? He slid and fell over, and then just turned into a character move and crawled along the floor for a few. Good save!

Posted: 2/2/05 at 2:43pmYeah, I caught that. Sherrie Rene Scott's silver bracelet fell off, and Norbert slipped on it, which was really scary to see. Then I spent the rest of the curtain call worried that someone else was going to slip on it and break their neck.

Wendy, awwww. That's one of the cutest stories I've heard. Didn't he come back to Wicked two days early, too? Something like that. Still! Awwww. That makes for an adorable mental image. Hehehe.
GFC, Norbert's really good at covering up mistakes for the most part. One night he slipped and fell in Wicked and when he got up, he was all "..That was smooth."

Also saw Norbert fall at the end - he did a great job of popping back up again as if nothing had happened.
Also, John Lithgow had something red (lipstick maybe) stuck to his right cheek for part of the first act - the Texan gal seemed to notice it though and managed to smudge it off (sorta) at the table while they were sitting. Still noticed the red smudge in Act 2, was suprised they didnt get rid of it at intermission!

I've always been a huge John L. fan, but I have to say that Leo stole the show! I loved him in Wicked, but this show gives him a character that he can do so much with. I'm totally crazy about him, he did a phenominal job!
After the show I got autographs and pics w/ the main castmembers - none of them were so chatty, but they were very polite.
Can't wait to see this show again!

Posted: 2/4/05 at 11:59amMy roommate saw it last night and hated it. He said he thought it was a little vulgar and common. He said it was another one of those musicals that was one big inside joke. He said it was almost like it was commenting on itself like "We are so funny and clever!" He said that he was papered in and that he was certainly glad he didn't pay for it.

I agree that the show seemed to be saying "we are so funny and clever," but I felt like they were doing so for a thematic reason. The show is about conartists. Therefore, a good deal of the humor and staging emphasized the ways that theatre itself is a con, and that we in the audience are the (willing, eager) victims of the con.
I can understand someone finding that type of humor annoying or not funny, but its certainly is not a situation where the show went for easy the easy humor by making fun of its audience.

Saw the show on the 5th. Someone was asking about the stagedoor nad it's pretty crowded already. The guy that runs it I guess you'd say is not very nice, just warning you. I thought the show was great. Joanna and Norbert were definitely the best parts. I have to plug Laura Marie Duncan though. She plays a lot of the random roles through out the show and she's really great! You can read a full review and pictures at my lj.
