Okay call me out of the loop but exactly how many shows does Disney have Broadway plans for?
Currently they are running, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and the recently opened Tarzan.
I've heard about The Little Mermaid is there anything else?

Posted: 4/26/06 at 8:58pmNow I love Disney more than anything, and i'm a huge fan of Beauty and the Beast on stage...I wasn't too keen on the Lion King. It just seems to me that all Broadway will be soon enough is Disney... seriously how many theatres are going to be disney shows????

THE LITTLE MERMAID isn't until 2007/2008.
ALADDIN is still in it's very very beginning stages of writing so don't expect it for quite a few years.
By that time, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST will most likely have closed.

Posted: 4/26/06 at 9:37pmI wouldn't mind if they were original productions like Aida, but I don't like them taking old movies and putting them on stage.

Posted: 4/26/06 at 9:42pmI would like to see Disney put on another original show (by that I mean not one of their animated movies), but maybe not for a few years.

Ok, I love Disney and plan to work there, but please...some of their musical decisions are so stupid.
I think adding Mary Poppins is enough for a while. If they want to add another they should drop the Little Mermaid idea.
Now Aladdin...does that mean they'll get rid of the mini-show in DCA? I love that show and see it all the time. It's cheesy but it's a 'cheaper' shorter show.
Anyway, that's my two cents pour vous.
London: Les Mis, Lion King, Sound of Music, Joseph, Hairspray, Billy Elliot
France: Le Roi Lion, Cabaret
Germany: Der Konig der Lowen
Holland: Tarzan & Les Mis

Posted: 4/26/06 at 11:07pmI agree that the Disney shows are pretty good for the most part and actually Aladdin onstage intrigues me a lot...but I'm not so keen on Little Mermaid and other stuff, and it seems like a little much to have all these projects around the same time.

I agree, I don't mind Disney but do something original.
Anyways, so by the time the Tonys start next year, we'll have
Beauty & The Beast
Little Mermaid
Lion King
Tarzan
Poppins
5 shows? Ugh.

MARY POPPINS will be opening in November at the New Amsterdam. THE LION KING is moving to the Minksoff in June.
There has been talk that once MARY POPPINS opens, then BEAUTY AND THE BEAST will be closing soon. Disney will have four shows running on Broadway meaning that they will be competing against themselves.
If they want to adapt one of their movies to the stage, then I nominate THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. Beautiful score and movie, despite the utter ignorance of Hugo's novel.

Posted: 4/27/06 at 1:04amAgain I reiterate that I love Disney movies. That said I think BatB was perfect for the stage and they completely took the theatre community by storm by producing it. However, I feel that all disney shows since have diminished in quality. I think the problem isn't so much the quality of the movies they are turning as so much that fact that it's already been done, they rushed into too many shows after the initial success of BatB. Now as MusicMan says...they'll be competing against themselves. Hardly sounds like a great way to make a ton of money.

Posted: 4/27/06 at 1:07amI'm pretty sure Disney had deal in the mid-90's to produce 7 Broadway shows as a part of the renovation of Times Square into a theatre district. I wish they would have had a sub-clause saying they had to be good shows. harumph.

How many shoes does Disney want to operate?
All of them, of course.

Posted: 4/27/06 at 9:06amI loved BatB when I saw it but honestly why can't they be more original?? Yes its Disney woohoo kids love the stories and lots of adults do to, but why is broadway becoming about taking a movie or book and putting it on stage? Sorry to threadjack a bit but this just doesn't make sense to me. Oh and the whole taking an artist's songs and making them into a musical really bugs me too. Okay vent/threadjack over lol.

Personally i think they should ditch the Mermaid idea, CLose Tarzan early and bring over the German Production of Hunchback they did back in 1999. It was dark, the mucis rocked, the sets were amazing and people actually died for a change.
other than that, Pocohontas is my next choice to be done. The need to stop doing all these kiddie shows and use their material that has real adult potential, maybe then they will gain some credibility.

Posted: 4/27/06 at 9:56amMusicMan - there is a Hunchback musical. Saw it in London a few years back and it is the worst thing I have ever seen and I and many others walked out during intermission.

Posted: 4/27/06 at 10:17amI have the English libretto to Hunchback from Lapine. It is really well written and a nice adaption from the book and film. I'm surprised they insist on using Hwang for anything,,, good thing Wolverton isn't doing any more for them.
