I can't speak for SAG or the DGA, but at first we were told (WGA, my union) that to see this film, we'd have to attend screenings. We were strongly advised that we should see it on the big screen, with lush sound. Screeners were not part of the mix. And in the last 48 hours, everyone in the industry received a screener. Either Disney changed its mind late, or the plan was always to withhold early and then reward late. Last year, for example, we got SAVING MR. BANKS fairly early.
Just interesting to note. Musicals are notoriously absent from Writers Guilt nominations. But who knows? We're all watching now. And our big Christmas go-to has been circumvented.
I'm thinking of holding off, and saving mine, and seeing it big. Anyone have strong feelings about that?

I saw it this weekend at a private event. I don't think that seeing it on the big screen makes it better. My opinion is that huge fans of this musical are not going to love this film.
I saw the original production a dozen times and I think the film is great. It perfectly captures the qualities that make the musical so special.
If anything I think that people unfamiliar with the show won't fully appreciate it with a single viewing.
As a self-identified fan of this musical, I thought the movie did a great job. While I find the full musical more effective, I fully recommend this adaptation.
I know I'm going to really like it.
48 hours, and it still hasn't leaked onto the Interwebs?!

Those screener DVD's have been out for over a week. People don't want to copy or distribute them for fear of the wrath of the mouse.
Don't anger the Disney Gods. They are ALLWWWAAYS WATCHING....
I will be amazed if the screener doesn't leak. They always do.
