I attended the final performance of Disney's On The Record last night. The evening started with the announcement that the part of Diane usually played by Kaitlin Hopkins would be played by Lyn Philistine. Having seen Kaitlin in BARE, I was a bit disappointed. I asked some staff members at the DCPA if they knew why she was not doing the show and they didn't know. We just speculated that since it was the last show she just decided to leave. The energy was pretty high and Ashley Brown pretty much stole the show. Brian Sutherland came in a close second to stealing the show. Both were given major applause for everything they did. But the entire cast sounded excellent. It was nice to see the large Buell Theatre pretty much full (At least the orchestra section. Couldn't see the mezz. or balcony but I am sure people were up there. And the theatre holds 2,800 plus) The only performer that looked like she was pretty much over it was Keewa Nurullah. She rarely smiled and just appeared to be walking through the show. Others noticed this also. All in all a fun show. I can see how this show would not make it on Broadway. It is sung through completely with a thin boy meets girl storyline. Outstanding numbers were Reflections from Mulan, Pink Elephants on Parade and the multi language "Be Our Guest". For those of us who knew it was the final performance, we could sense the emotion during "When You Wish Upon a Star". Mr. Sutherland got a bit choked up and at the songs end when they leave the recording studio and say goodbye to each other, you could sense that they really were saying goodbye. A fun evening. A nice trip down memory lane. But this show would work much better trimmed down and performed at one of Disney's parks.

I just found out that Kaitlin was not in the show on Friday either. Not sure when she left.
I failed to mention in my "review" that there were named Characters" in this show. But unless you matched the faces with the naes in the program, you wouldn't know who was who since there is no dialoug in the show.
