Duo Scene- Lovers and Other Strangers
Solo-If they could see me now-Sweet Charity
Monologues- Lost in Yonkers and Cymbeline
Fear no more the heat o' the sun, Nor the furious winter's rages; Thou thy worldly task hast done, Home art gone and ta'en thy wages: Golden lads and girls all must, As chimney-sweepers, come to dust. ~Cymbeline

re: District Competitions

Solo Musical: Diva's Lament - Spamalot - and yes I realize that I am at risk of competing with a quite overdone song.
Large Group Musical: Welcome to the 60's - Hairspray
Monologues: A Company of Wayward Saints and Talk Radio

I chose the Talk Radio monologue before I knew it was going on Broadway. So...whatever.

re: District Competitions

What are district competitions? I don't think my area has them but they sound cool.

re: District Competitions

Ditto the My Fair Lady comment.
Does it have anything to do with National Thespian Honors Society, because my school is just joining in on that and they have yet to tell us anything about it.

re: District Competitions

wow, congrats, but watch out singing that song at such a young age. you might regret it one day.. but congrats anyway!

i got Honorable Mentions for both my events! i'm so happy. and the large group musical i directed got a superior as well. plus the one-act is going to states.

so if you're going to Florida State Thespian Competition, be sure to check out A...My Name is Alice! and PM me too cuz FL States is just fun to talk about lol.

ah, to be a thespian. what a life.

re: District Competitions

Well we already had Districts down here, it went well. I was in:

Duet Acting Contemp. Comedic - The Perfect Relationship
Solo Acting Male Contemp. Dramatic - Art, Yasmina Reeza

I went to State with both...but changed the flow of my pieces DRASTICALLY. It was a bad move, because our Duo people finally laughed and on my Monologue it was much more dramatic and slow lol...so I went over time in both re: District Competitions.

State Thespians is coming up and I'm doing:
Solo Acting Male: Spring Awakening/The Nerd (You do 2 conflicting pieces)
One Act, Student Directed: Work In Progress (The P.I.)
Ensemble Acting: Biloxi Blues (Eugene)

re: District Competitions

My Fair Lady and ILoveMyDictionary, most districts hold two competitions: the One-Act Festival and the Individual Events Competition.

At the One-Act Festival, however many schools are in the district and register for competition perform their one-act pieces (40 minutes or less in length) for audiences (usually made up of the other competing schools) over a course of one or two days. At the end of the festival, one show is named the "Best of Show" and a small number of others (the number depends on how many schools are in your district) are chosen to go to the State Thespian Festival later in the year (around April, usually). Troupes are also given Superior and Excellent ribbons, based on the ratings received by judges. There are also various other awards, such as "Best Ensemble" and "Best Lead Actor," etc.

Then you've got your Individual Events competition...that's where all/most of the schools in your district get together for usually a day and compete with individual pieces, such as monologues, solo musical, duet musical, costuming, directing, etc. Towards the end of the day, "Best of Show" winners are posted for each category (or, each room, if there are too many in a category to fit into one room). These "Best of Show" winners perform at the awards ceremony and, here, compete for the "Critics' Choice Award"...which goes to the competition piece which sponsors believe will best represent the district at the State Thespian Festival. Furthermore, each school may enter only five events at the State Festival. Our five are usually chosen by picking out Superior-rated events and having them run off against each other for the spots.

Yeah, so those are district competitions.

re: District Competitions

The only competition that I go is the Ohio Music Education Association's Solo and Ensemble District Festival! There are 3 diffrent classes. Class C is easy, class B is medium, and class A is the toughest out of them all. You have to pick an art song to sing for a judge and they rate your voice. 1-5. 1 being the highest honor you can get. Nobody ever gets below a 3 but even so a 2 or 3 is pretty bad lol. That's all I go to!

re: District Competitions

Wait, if 1 is the best, than why is 2 bad?

re: District Competitions

because it pretty much says on the certificate that a 2 has mistakes and is not worthy of the highest rating! Literally it says that! So a 2 is bad for alot of people lol

re: District Competitions

is this thespians? i'm the activities coordinator for my troupe..

i didn't do an IE, but all the IE's from my school were winners at states are are going on to international's in nebraska.
songs/monologues that won were, "i'm not that smart" from spelling bee, "green finch and linnet bird" from sweeney todd, "there's a fine, fine line" from avenue q, "a boy like that/i have a love" from west side story, contrasting monologues from much ado about nothing/split second, and contrasting monologues from julius caesar and a view from the bridge. and the only technical IE for costume design is going also from our school.

and we did a showcase group dance, that was a kind of interpretive dance that was about man and woman and their struggle against the 7 vices and 7 virtues. i was in that, and we got 3 standing ovations (the only showcase to get them!) and i was told and complimented by many who said that it was a really beautiful piece of theatre and something very deep etc. etc. states was great this year. i looooooved it!
we have one of the best theatre dept.'s around, it is really fantastic.

good luck to you all!

and ps- if this isn't thespian related, i'm sorry and please disregard this post. =)
hear my song; it was made for the time when you don't know where to go, listen to the song that i sing, you'll be fine..
