Do I Hear a Waltz?

Am I the ONLY one here who did NOT know that this is a musical version of the movie Summertime, my favorite alltime Katharine Hepburn movie??

I bought the Pasadena Playhouse production of this in Chicago last week, AND LOVE IT!

It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story... AGATHA CHRISTIE, Life magazine, May 14, 1956

We were just sitting here listening to the Original Broadway Cast Recording - Sergio Franchi has the most glorious and silken Tenor voice I've ever heard (and I'm not fond of most tenors)...and you can hear so many similarities to Light In The Piazza. I really like this show a lot.

"I don't really get the ending,all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang,and later she kissed him on the toilet,after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung,and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen,and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady?Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

The score is quite good. It has bettered with age and sounds even exceptional compared to what passes for musical scores these days.

An version I like to play often is Percy Faith's, yes Percy Faith's, instrumental verion of the full score. The Rodgers melodies are glorious (jus as SS's lyrics are always brilliant).

The Pasadena Playhouse revival CD has Sondheim's original, more caustic lyrics to 'We're Gonna Be Alright' which were changed to make the song more 'positive' during the out of town tryouts.

'Our whole family shouts. It comes from us livin' so close to the railroad tracks'

Yet another "The score was great, but the book didn't work!" musicals. Too bad. The CD is a treat, though.

Praying Decca Broadway will put "Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope" on CD!

To be technical, it's the musical version of the play "Time of the Cuckoo" by Arthur Laurents. It starred Shirley Booth on Broasdway. "Summertime" was the film adaptation.

The tug of war on tempos between orchestra and performers on the Pasadena Playhouse recording is just plain embarrassing.
