re: Flop Musicals

THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM, THE GOLDEN APPLE and THE HUMAN COMEDY.
re: Sweet Georgia Brown - A Must See!

Ah yes, Sweet Georgia Brown. Thank you, BSoBW2. It was wonderful seeing these clips.

bryan must be a masochist. I think he likes the abuse we heap on him.
re: Worst Changes Made in an Amateur Production

VonTusselGirl might be the new frontrunner! I can just imagine the coronaries that Sondheim and Lapine would have had if they had seen that!
re: Worst Changes Made in an Amateur Production

This thread is freakin' awesome! I haven't laughed so hard in a long time! Here's some I remember:

Teen Angel's line change for the song "Beauty School Drop-Out" in GREASE: "But no customer would go to you, unless she was a BOOKER!!!"

New lyrics to "Thurio's Rhumba" from TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA: "She said 'Love lovea lovea lovea, Peace peacea peacea peacea, hope hopea hopea hopea, friends friendsa friendsa friendsa, mates matesa matesa matesa wow!'"

I have been in a

re: Great Performances in Shows that Flopped or Got Panned

Dee Hoty, like Chita gets nominted for practially EVERY show she does. Heck, she even got a Tony nomination out of FOOTLOOSE!

Another example: Christopher Plummer in CYRANO.

re: Will Phantom Ever Close?

No show runs forever.

Well, maybe London's production of THE MOUSETRAP...

re: Great Performances in Shows that Flopped or Got Panned

Well, probably the best example would be Delores Gray, who won a Best Actress Tony for the musical CARNIVAL IN FLANDERS. Total run of the show: Six performances.

re: Star replacements who were actually incredible.

I wish I was around during the time, but I would have loved to have seen Pearl Bailey and Ethel Merman in HELLO, DOLLY!
re: SPIDERMAN: THE MUSICAL Given the Green Light

Well, the only way I could see this working would be to give this a rock score...

I try to be very optimistic about show ideas...

But, wow! That's all I can say.

re: shows that flopped that should not have

Indeed, Gypsy9. Some some I'm thinking of...

THE GOLDEN APPLE
CANDIDE
THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM
BABY
MACK AND MABEL

re: SPIDERMAN: THE MUSICAL Given the Green Light

I am a huge fan of Broadway musicals. I am a huge fan of Spider-Man. Why can't I stop shuddering?
re: Who is the greatest American playwright of all-time?

If I HAD to pick one...Arthur Miller. Wow, that was hard.

EDIT: And D2, I was going to mention Wilder.

re: Who is the greatest American playwright of all-time?

Awww, do I hafta CHOSE?! That's like picking a favorite among your children!
re: Mame on DVD 19th June 07

Don't get me startedon THE WIZ. That movie had me crying for a week!

When I think of the movie MAME I think of Kirby Furlong as Young Patrick Dennis He gave one of the most excrutiating "LEMME OUTTA HERE!!!" performances ever captured on fim! He looked like his mother MADE him go into show business!

re: Was there ever a show you saw that bored you?

Lots.
Songs About Food or Drink

What songs from shows have to do with food or drink? So far I've thought of:

"Food, Glorious Food" from OLIVER!
"Chrysanthemum Tea" from PACIFIC OVERTURES
"Booze" from RAISIN
"Ice Cream" from STREET SCENE and SHE LOVES ME
"A Real Nice Clambake" ::Shudders:: from CAROUSEL

re: Two Gentleman of Verona-Best Musical?

Also, consider another lighthearted musical that was packin' 'em in at the St. James at the time: The 1971 revival of NO, NO, NANETTE. After that fun, nostalgic trip to the 1920s many people thought FOLLIES was a real bummer.

To quote Steven Suskin: "TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA worked in 1972. FOLLIES didn't."

re: TENDERLOIN: Could it work with a new book?

Ya know Gypsy9, people might complain about the critics, but that has to be one of the most accurate reviews I've ever read!
