They vote for some drastically different stuff each year. 10 years ago Thoroughly Modern Millie wins. That's the same group that voted for Once. Memphis wins 2 years ago and Spring Awakening won 3 years prior to that (the fluffy Spamalot and Jersey Boys won before that) . They often vote for very different types of shows in the same categories. I'm not saying that they can't have variety but it seems like sometimes they let 'bad' shows win and then really artistic shows win.
Well they liked One Man, Two Guvernors...
Do you think they should vote for the same type of show, year after year? What would the point of that be? SOME voters likely do, but with over 800 voters there is a lot of leeway. They should be voting for what they think is the best, not their personal favorite. MOST people can distinguish between the two. I KNEW The King's Speech was an incredibly film, but I still LIKED The Fighter more. My job is to look at things objectively, not personally.
The "Tony Voters" have changed drastically over the last 10 years. Don't you remember the controversy a few years ago when they revoked the voting privileges of many of the critics, actors, columnists, etc. Ie some of only unbiased people in the industry.

Critics, actors and columnists seem like the type of people that would vote for Once not TMM or Spamalot. I'm not saying that there shouldn't be variety but they have voted for bad shows in the past that don't have the same artistic value of other winners.
Define/exemplify 'bad show'. It's just opinion, no matter whose opinion it is: yours v Tony voters.
Remember, some shows deemed as bad, could STILL be the best in a weak year.
(for example: they freakin' nominated Leap of Faith this year.)
I think the problem is that they don't. They think Once should win Best Musical, which is fine, but then just blindly check off every award they're nominated for as well. Book? Scenic Design? Lighting? Really? Sometimes the Best Musical doesn't necessarily have all the best elements.
Look at Peter and the Starcatcher- it won all the technical awards because the production is beautiful, but that doesn't make it the best play. Voters just have tunnel vision about new musicals.

In this age of American Idol, I'm wondering why they even have voters. Let the public decide. The award is meaningless anyway (as we all found out when Contact won Best Musical).
