Lane has originated a number of roles. Perhaps you did not see the performances, but he has not really done more revivals than original parts. If you look at the body of work, they are probably about equal. I too would love to see him originate another role, although your definition of 'originate' may be different than mine. For example, would you say that he would be originating the role of Hanratty on Broadway, or is that a 'revival' of sorts because it is based on a movie and book?

At any rate, it will be interesting to see what the TONY committee does when it comes to male performances in plays.

Of course I know that he has originated many roles, but not very recently.

He will be recreating a role whenever he plays Hanratty on Broadway. He will put his own twist on the role (just as he does whenever he recreates a role) but it woun't be an orginal role. I mean him playing a new chracter in a new play.

He's not recreating any role when he plays Hanratty in the readings. It is an original role.

But Tom Hanks originated the role in the movie.

It's still an original role for the stage. Just because someone played the part in a movie doesn't mean the role isn't original.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Well, I know that but what I'm saying is the role has already been played by someone, and that person made the role well known. It's hard to explain what I'm trying to say...oh well.

Exactly. Raul Julia originated the role of Guido in NINE even if Marcello Mastroianni created Guido in 8 1/2, Marissa Jaret Winokur originated the role of Tracy in the HAIRSPRAY the musical even if Ricki Lake originated the role on film, etc, etc, etc.
The role is newly created for the stage so Lane will be originating it.
