Does Napster have showtunes?

Does Napster have showtunes?

Yesterday I lost all of my CDs, (I'll spare you my angry rant) so I'm trying to replace stuff by getting it off Napster's free trial. They don't seem to have showtunes, but I may be missing something. Has anyone gotten broadway songs off Napster before?

Yeah, I'd send you some songs too. Angry rant or no, if someone stole my showtunes, I think I'd die.

Be sure to read the fine print. I think the free trial applies to their subscription service meaning when you stop paying, you lose the music. You can also buy tracks, of course, but that isn't free.

In other words, you're getting a limited license to the music rather than a permanent one, huh?

Well, if you burn the music right away to an mp3 player or cd, the cd doesn't know you lost the license. lol

I have iTunes and just a few hours ago downloaded the free Napster Light to see which had more of a selection fitting to my tastes. iTunes has most all shows to download. Napster has CRAP. There's not even a tab for Soundtracks or Shows. That's a hint right there. Searched for Caroline, got nothing. They do have Wicked, but that's all I saw, and... yeah.

You have to search 'broadway' as the artist name on Napster. It still sucks because you can't burn full CDs.

Is this a big downloading ordeal or a website? Does it have a free trial/ what are the rates? And can you burn every song on a CD?

There seem to be 2 different business models that these sites follow.

The first is fairly straightforward - you pay for each track or album, download it, and get specific use rights (burn X # of playlists, copy to X # of computers, etc.).

The second model is subscription based. You pay a monthly fee and get access to a large number of tracks that you can stream (i.e. listen to, but not download) and possibly a certain number of downloads. You may also get access to internet radio stations or other services. If you stop paying your subscription fee, most, if not all, of your music goes away. All of the subsctiption services have different features, so you have to compare very carefully.

The story gets more complicated with some companies because they offer both models from the same site. I think this is the case with Napster. Some companies also require you to use their software while others are web-based.

I would love to be more specific, but I still buy all my music on CD. My only direct experience with the legal download sites is a couple of tracks I bought off iTunes just to test it out.

Hope this helps,

Zack

I appreciate it but do they have a free trial and can you burn and entire CD, not just selected tracks like Napster?

And to the kind people who sent me PMs about AIMing me my lost CDs, I appreciate it but I can't for a few reasons. So thanks anyway.

If anyone can IM me sometime and send me some tracks from the revival of "Nine" I'd be ever so thankful! ( I'm looking for "Call from the Vatican" and "Unusual Way".) My IM is: CherOfTheSeas

You can download the iTunes software for free (no trial), which you can use as a regular audio player. Set up an account to use the Music Store. I believe that you can save the songs/albums you buy to your computer, having the ability to burn them yourself.

The free trial on Napster is only for their subscription service which allows you to listen to tracks and download them, but not burn them to CD. In order to burn them, you have to pay the 99 cents per track. Any tracks you don't pay for go away when you stop subscribing. You can also just buy tracks for 99 cents without subscribing at all. They call this Napster Light.

There isn't going to be a legal service that allows you to burn songs for free. Limewire and Kazaa, of course, are stealing. If people don't mind being thieves, I guess that is one way to go. They just shouldn't complain when their favorite show doesn't get recorded because it's no longer financially feasible.

What is Broadway? A street? Some say it's a street. Some say it is the best street in the world. Others think its terrible. That's the beauty of it, it's terribly beautiful. Some hate it and don't know why. Others love it and don't know why. That's what makes it so wonderful, it's a mystery.

The thing about these illegal sites is that they can track you, I think, and I don't want to be fined or anything.

I honestly feel your pain! My car was broken into a few weeks ago and the musical theatre collection I had been building since I was twelve was completely stolen. It broke my heart.

I had my car broken into in my driveway this January, and over $3,500 worth of CD's & DVD's were taken IN BROAD DAYLIGHT! We can all take some small comfort that whoever steals these CD's cannot sell these without the jewel cases, so they're pretty much stuck with CD's the average theif would never want.

Be careful about Limewire... because your not paying for the music, you could get fined for illegal downloading. I'm not sure if they are still cracking down on it as much as they were... but i heard it's a pretty big fine.
