"it bugs me that my dad says he's taking me to see "that one play" because he doesn't want to admit he's going to see a musical. that really pisses me off."

But plays are not always musicals.

It bugs me when people use the verb "showing" to refer to live theatre, as in "Promises Promises is showing at the Broadway".
It is PLAYING at the Broadway. Movies are SHOWING (or playing)at various multiplexes.
